I'm no expert, but the way I see it is this: the second photo has a bit of context to it. I can see that they are insects (?) on a leaf, and I can see that they are in a garden setting. The first one I see insects on a branch, with a really blurry background that could be anything green. I can hold my finger two inches from my eye, and still see the shape of the house across the street beyond it. It's blurry, but not so much that it turns into a brown blob. The second picture more closely resembles that effect, therefore I think that the mind's eye puts it together and places the viewer in the garden with the insects on the leaf.
