Default Assignment: "f/16"

Here's my attempt at an f/16 shot. I think it's a little too bright, maybe. I liked being able to combine the two things I love to do the most - photographing and flute-ing! Thanks for looking!

Camera: Nikon D70
ISO: 200
Exposure: 0
Aperture: f/16
Aperture Priority Mode
Lens: 18-70 mm

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I am a total noob and am still trying to learn about all this stuff. I did read some beginner's tips and tutorials .. I guess now I just have to figure out for myself how everything relates to each other Thanks again!

Specifically, though, f/16 or similar small apertures (some cameras have f/32) give you much greater DOF (depth of focus, or if you're an old-timer from the film days like me, depth of field). That is at the smaller f-stops (oops, there's the old-timer terminology again :-) It's now called "Av" for "Aperture value) there will be some distance in front of, and much more in the distance beyond what you focus on with the camera lens that will actually be in sharp focus.

In close-up and macro photography, the DOF will be smaller, but still a greater distance in focus with small apertures than with larger ones. Remember, too, that a larger number represents a smaller opening, and a smaller number represents an opening number.

Hope I'm not insulting your intellegence, but you said that you're a noob. Hang in there, it will come naturally before long! Also, look back through past DPS articles and read the ones named "Digital Photography 101, 102 . . . etc" They are great articles to learn the basics from!

Default Having Issues with this assignment

Okay, so I have a Canon Rebel XT and I have it on the AV Priority. Set it to 16, and set my ISO to 800 and 1000 (was taking photos inside). Take picture with and with out flash and no matter what my camera takes a prolonged exposure. I than went outside to try and do it in the sun. Once again tried it, messing with the ISO (brought it down to 200) and still had the same issues. Someone help please, I don't get what I am doing wrong and this has me so frustrated.

Well, ferrettifr, an aperture (Av) of f/16 will require longer exposure to get enough light through such a small opening, and with inside lighting a tripod will certainly be needed for the longer exposure time. However, outside in bright sunlight should yield fast enough shutter speeds to easily hand-hold the camera. I took my Nikon D60 outside in bright sunlight at about 6:00 pm CDT with Av Priority set at f/16 and get a shutter speed of 1/250th second at ISO 800. If the same is done in the shade, it will, of course, require longer shutter speeds.
