Have a read of our FAQ - it has illustrated guides on a number of approaches.

BTW, on the subject of "Why f/16?" it is because many photographers regard it as a poor choice. Most lenses are sharpest a stop or two down from wide open and start to suffer from "diffraction" (an overall softness to the picture) when stopped down too far. This assignment gives the challenge of going to a setting you might not often use and seeing just what you can do with it.

Default Assignment: F/16 - RYB

f/16 RBY Assignment - DPS

This looks better on black click here.

So this guy says my point and shoot camera's f/5.6 is equivalent to f/16.

Anyway, if he's wrong this still falls under RYB category

Camera: Canon PowerShot A710 IS
Exposure: 0.025 sec (1/40)
Aperture: f/5.6 (the f/16 equivalent for point and shoot cameras )
Focal Length: 5.8 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

Default Assignment: f16

I've been wanting to creatively photograph my bicycle and this assignment seem the perfect opportunity. Although I like the shallow DOF shot better, this one reminds and reinforces the lesson on making the subject of the photo unquestionable. Because of the bad time of day for outdoor photography and my only time to work on the assignment this week, I changed the color image to a mostly desaturated version, which I like better.

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi
Exposure: 0.167 sec (1/6)
Aperture: f/16.0
Focal Length: 28 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off
Exposure Program: Manual
Date and Time (Original): 2009:06:25 12:09:52

Default The Contest Debate

Hi all,

I am going to chime in with my 2c worth. The forum that we are participating in here is "Digital Photography Assignments" with a different topic posted each week. I enjoy participating because the assignments challenge me to explore and create and thereby improve my photography. The contest aspect is secondary, but it encourages people to go beyond the ordinary which further inspires me to say, "hey, can I capture something like that?"

My photographic life started a long time ago with a Kodak Brownie. My first trip to Europe was shot with an Instamatic and the photos are great...because I took the time before I left to look at books with stunning images and points of view. Several years ago I traveled to Australia with my first digital... 2.5 mp Sony point and shoot. Again, I love the photos as I do the photos taken with my Sony H1, the last camera before my DSLR (and I still use the H1 too).

I am not a professional by any means. I am an eager amateur who is here to learn.

One suggestion I have for those who would like a contest aspect for the group who cannot set an aperture of f/16 is why not take a poll next Wednesday and vote among yourselves as to which you would award first place and 2 honorable mentions? Only RYB participants are eligible to vote.

EllenK
