Default Assignment Ghetto Lighting + Reflector

For the assignment this week I tried to mimic an Anne Geddes picture. Lacking both flower pots big enough to fit a baby and a cute baby, I ended up with a small teddy bear. Probably safer combination anyway on a kitchen table photo setup...

Assignment Ghetto reflection: bear

I used a mirror opposite of the spotlight to slightly balance out the harsh shadows it throws.

Date picture taken: May 21, 2009

EXIF:
Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 0.2 sec (1/5)
Aperture: f/14.0
Focal Length: 44 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: -5/3 EV
Flash: No Flash
Shooting Mode: IR Control

And as people appreciated the inclusion of the setup from last week, this is what it looked like for this week: http://www.flickr.com/photos/karwash/3550611791/. Behind the cloth is an halogen reading lamp.

Default Question

Is this contest limited to artificial light sources only?

Pretty much. Here is the definition from last week:

Quote:
In this assignment you need to use artificial lighting you have on hand: a flashlight, a desk lamp, living room lamp, etc. No strobes, flash or "Professional" lighting or full sunlight.
This time round, you need to add in a reflector as well. Something like using heavy curtains to limit sunlight to a specific spot would work because you are taking control of the lighting but not a sunny day in a ghetto...

Picture of camera filters. For the reflector, i used a cardboard cover with foil. You can see the foil in the reflection of the lens to the right.

Default Assignment: Ghetto Lighting + Reflector (16 May 2009)

Hi all, I am new to DPS forum and this is my first post.

For this photo, I am shooting for my new SDX model.

Firstly, I set my aperture very small so that no ambient light can be captured by the sensor. Then I turned on the flash and bounced it at an angle towards the DIY aluminum foil reflector to create a softer light and that it will not directly blast off its face.
I purposely make the shoot a bit under exposed to try to create a "killer" like feeling for his pose. Also, I tried to compose his eyes (half covered by the helmet) near the center to enhance the "killer" like feeling as well.

And here is the final shot without any post editing.

Nikon SB-24 Flash

Aperture: f/20
Shutter Speed: 1/250 sec

Default lamp

This one I took when I needed new bedside table lamp shades. I liked the shadow it created on the wall.

Default Assignment: "Ghetto Lighting + Reflector"

All I have is ghetto lighting, for the most part, it drives me crazy. I have to admit, it definitely makes your creative muscles work a little harder. Here's my submission this week. Using some leftover material from a DIY light tent (found here on DPS) and a clamp on work lamp with a 100w cfl light bulb, I was able to work something out.

Default Assignment Ghetto Lighting + Reflector

Wanted to try portrait style, but did not have anyone to photo (everyone is usually working in the middle of the day)...so...found an old decoration in attic to substitute for a live person....lol. Used outdoor flood light kit in dark room with a white posterboard as reflector.
