Default Shallow Depth Of Field/ Macro

We have had requests for a macro assignment so here it is
But since not everyone has a Macro lens.. we have added Shallow DOF

Darren has a post on the blog pertaining to this subject shallow depth of field.

the main idea is to use a Large Aperture IE:- F2.8 or the largest your lens can do.. so if its f3.5 use f3.5

My examples:

ok gang show us what you can do

Here is my attempt. I don't think I was wide open with this attempt. I believe I was at f5.6 on this shot. But the effect is still there.

ok this is not a contest.. its a dandelion..
and you are not meant to "beat" it.. you are meant to go out and shoot the best you can while learning something new

I took this one with a 1960s vintage Nikkormat and a 300mm Nikkor lens.

yellow tulips dof

This was taken during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival near La Conner, Washington.

For a more recent shot, I was playing around with my new light box and Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens.

The intent was to focus on the small babushka in front, with the others less in focus. However, I'm not too happy with the lighting. They've got a glare from somewhere on their heads, and it seems a bit dark.

I was pleased with this one - the focus picks out the lichen, with the depth of field moving gradually out of focus towards the bottom of the picture and more strongly in the background.

Default Hi!

I'm not sure if this would apply, because this isn't a very wide open aperture (7.1). But it's about as macro as I can do with my current equipment. A macro lens is someday in my future...

Dandelion Spider

I actually tend to shoot on smaller aperture settings (higher values) when I work psuedo-macro because my lens is so near the subject that a large aperture (2.8 or so) tends to throw too much of the subject out of focus for my tastes.
