Default Assignment: Rule of Thirds

This is my first assignment posting so bare with me!!!!
Think this applies to "rule of thirds" as i placed the main point of interest in the bottom right (reflection of sun and fence in the water) and the top third is the horizon and the reflection of the clouds???

I will note (again... see my post from yesterday) that a lot of the posts don't seem (to me) to be really grasping the concept of the rule of thirds. Most of the time it is important not to slavishly follow the rules of photography and to let your taste be the final judge of what works.

For this week, though, be hard on yourself. Try to get a great shot that clearly uses the "thirds" grid. Even better, explain your thinking so that you can be sure we see things the way you do. For example, here is a shot I took last summer:

The photo is about the cloud of pollen from the grass as it is shaken. The cloud is centered roughly on the top right intersection of the grid. If had just taken it and wanted to enter it for the contest, I might even consider cropping the picture to center the cloud more accurately.

In practice, it is often better to be quite loose with the parameters. I would humbly suggest that some of the examples on the blog show a looser approach. For this assignment though, keep it tight. If you are not sure you get it, how about asking, using a non-eligible photo (taken before 4 February) which we can discuss?

Thanks,

Wulf

Hi Wulf,
I'm new here and would like to take you up on your offer to discuss the rule of thirds on a non eligible photo

My take on this picture...I think I have filled the frame. I think things are in focus. Is there one point of interest? No not really. As for the rule of thirds I'm not sure. The flowers fill the bottom third, columns filling the upper third. I would be really interested in hearing what you have to say. Thank you in advance. ~Kim

Default Assignment: "Rule of Thirds"

I'm a newbie, so it seems fitting my first assignment is a "Back to Basics" one! Here's my best attempt (so far) at Rule of Thirds. I was trying to capture the mood in this picture, so I tried to place the focus on the eye by placing it at an intersecting point in the upper right quadrant. I think this fits the Rule of Thirds as I understand it - at least I hope it does.

Waiting for the boy

Taken with: Canon Power Shot S5 IS
Taken on: February 11, 2009 at 11:06 p.m.
Flash Used: No
Focal Length: 22.5mm
F-Number: F/3.5
Exposure Time: 3/10 sec.

I would say that this image doesn't particularly rely on the rule of thirds for its effect - I see the sweeping curve in the foreground as much more dominant, followed by the vertical lines created by the columns and their reflections. I could see it reflecting balance but not the rule of thirds.

Do you see what I mean?

Wulf

ps. I've got a busy weekend and am moving into a new flat tomorrow... so if I don't reply to any questions, please don't anyone be upset. Help each other out while I'm gone, eh?

Thanks for your comments Wulf. As I was scanning my older pictures, that one didn't seem to have the "Rule" so I figured I'd ask. thanks, back to look at more!

mfhurst, thank you so much for the compliment. I really appreciate it. That particular photos is one of my very favorites. I knew in my mind how I wanted it to look but It didn't look like much in the camera. However, when I got home and put it on the PC, I was so happy. This gives me loads of encouragement. Thank you so much.
