We do try to mix it up a bit - complex themes and simple themes (I don't imagine there will be quite so much discussion next week over what "Morning" means), shots demanding specific approaches or even specific equipment and those which are very broad.

Don't be put off having a go though - reaching above yourself is the only way to climb up

Can you tell me if a photo fits the bill or not, if I send you the links?

shucks. ten days too early... anywho, just wanted to share. hope this passes off for contre-jour

1/1000|6.3/f|85mm

edit: this has got to pass off for contre-jour. the more i look into this picture, the more i get irritated because i "think" it is crooked; and needs a bit of a clockwise rotation. but come to think of it, it's actually straight - and i just get "fooled" because of the shadow hiding the details on the left portion of the statue's base. go figure.

Default Assignment: Contre-jour

I hope this is right for the assignment, this one was a challenge. When I tried to get something that fit, it just didn't work. But while taking pictures at a zoo over labor day weekend I got this one.

I have no idea what kind of bird this is so I'll just call him a tropical bird. Maybe someone here knows who he really is!

He was wondering around on the ground, under the plants, in the shadows. He stepped out into a little clearing for just a second and stepped right into a ray of light. I was lucky to get the shot.

All I have done for post processing is to clone out a bit of well lit plant life that was very distracting in the upper right corner, and a slight saturation to the colors.

Tropical Bird

Thanks to my sis and A Team I now know the name of this bird is Victoria Crowned Pigeon!

Default Assignment-Contre-jour

I finally got it! Take of your object from the shaded area into the light and it don't have to be direct sunlight and don't use flash to create a Contre-jour but not too dark then your object becomes a sillhouette

Here is a picture of a Ghost Tree behind a fog in Pebble Beach, Calif

That's a pretty good summary - especially the points about avoiding a pure silhouette and also steering away from flash, which can be a brilliant tool to balance background light but makes things too flat for this kind of work.

Wulf

ps. glad to see you remembered the date as well

I love this shot too, perfect. It appears we are no longer quoting with images, maybe there was a thread about that. But, just in case, I won't "re-post" the image. It's the one with the small child on the toy tractor looking out through the door.

...great, great shot...regardless of the fact it's dead on for the assignment.
