Default rascally squirrel

This is NOT a great shot as I took it through a screen door because I had to act fast to catch this little guy stealing bird seed from our bird-feeder but I think it fits the contre-jour theme. He hangs upside down to munch on seeds after digging into the feeder and spilling tons of seeds onto our front porch.

Default Not for assignment

I actually did this for an assignment for my photography class. We were learning about light and it's directions. But I think it fits this assignment well. I hope. Just in case you can't figure it out...it's an egg. the other elements: bubble wrap, a green nalgene bottle, a box top, a flash light (the only light source), and lime green tissue paper. I wasn't sure which one fit best so I am showing both. One is full silhouette and one has a light source partially directed at. The first may be more contre-jour.

I would say the second one is definitely an example of silhouette rather than contre-jour work as you can't see any detail of the egg at all. The first one uses the light to reveal much more (but not all) of the subject; what it is missing is the light source showing in the background (directly or indirectly). Either would fit the present assignment perfectly, because you filtered the light through a bottle.

A shift of view point would have allowed one of the stalls or attractions to fill the background with light, probably working to even more effect if you could find a dark foreground element to act as a frame. Don't forget to have a clear subject as well, in the darkness but partially illuminated (rather than perfectly silhouetted) by the background light.

In the setting of the fair you could, for example, have looked for a child as the subject (with the light picking out some kind of emotional response, eg. excitement or frustration), standing in front of one of the stalls (lit background), with a couple of silhouetted adults in the foreground (as the frame). If it is still in town, you might want to go back for another mooch round.

ps. quoting pictures is fine once the contest has closed... we ask people not to do it during the contest because it makes it much harder to shortlist the entries
Thanks Wulf for giving them a look. I really enjoyed this assignment even though i didn't get it and your explantions help. I wish I could shoot the Fair again it was the first time i tried anything like that. Oh, Well...Next year!

Both of those look more like silhouette than contre-jour; for conte-jour, think of those semi-silhouette pictures where some light still gives detail to the subject.
