Auto/Program mode: the bane of advancement. It's great for snapshots, or if you already really understand things and can judge if the camera is "doing what you would do", but I think getting away from it is almost mandatory for really advancing in "photography".
That's part of why I decided to start participating in these contests...To force me to be creative and "envision pictures/look for pictures" to meet the requirements.

First Assignment Post!

"Assignment: Wide Open"

Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/640)
Aperture: f/3.5
Focal Length: 18 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: -2/3 EV

Full EXIF on flickr

I took the meaning of wide open most literally as well the 18mm focal length provided the widest apeture possible with the kit 18-55mm lens.
This really helped me open up to using my d40 non auto mode, I have used a Nikon Coolpix 995 for quite some time but pretty much just played with the auto programs. I recently purchased the d40 and have really enjoyed getting to know the camera and my real inner photography nut I finally took the plunge and did an assignment since I had the day off and my son was in day care. This really helped me get away from auto and take a more active role in composing the shot. Comments & Crits are welcome.

Forgot to mention Cropped pretty heavily in PS, some minor levels adjustments.

Yes, feel free, as long as it is up before the end of the contest of course, just make sure that whatever you put up is labeled correctly and has the EXIF data intact.

My son found this on the lawn. Shot at f4 with Canon 24-105mm (the widest it gets).
