Lightning Whelk crown
Taken on January 29, 2012 at 11.23am CST (edit) For all you lefties out there, the lightning whelk is the only whelk that has a left (sinistral) whorl and opening unlike most univalves. Some cultures believe this left-oriented characteristic gives the lightning whelk special powers in addition to its great beauty. Most plants grow with such a strange structure and I thought the rose was perfect for this.

Assignment: "Composition: Repetition and Patterns in Nature" Jan. 25 - Feb. 8
What fantastic and varied shots so far! Mine is not a patch on the zebra in the example image - love those teeth! - but anyway... I was at Auckland Zoo and for some reason this zebra suddenly took off and started chasing an ostrich. Thanks to burst mode, I was able to pan and capture the movement. I'm glad this one, with all four hooves off the ground, turned out relatively sharp. ![]() Camera Canon PowerShot SX230 HS Exposure 0.003 sec (1/320) Aperture f/5.6 Focal Length 46.9 mm ISO Speed 200 Exposure Bias 0 EV Flash Off, Did not fire Date and Time (Original) 2012:01:29 14:45:52+12:00

took this shot while treking through a rainforest nature reserve. the thick treetop canopy blocked out most of the light but a few streams made it through, illuminating bits and pieces throughout the understory.

I played around with half a dozen different ideas, but bumblebees are so unlikely and always make me smile.
I like this image because of the repetition of the yellow stripes on the bumblebee also repeated in the colour of the stamen. I like the many patterns in the image as well, especially the delicate veining on his wings and on the daisy petals. I also deliberately chose an image with a mature flower which to me speaks of the repetition of the pattern of life. ![]() Image shot on 31st January 2012 at 9.33am Canon EOS 60D Shutter speed 1/250 sec Aperture Value: f/6.3 ISO 400 Focal length 200mm Flash fired @ FlyingKiwiGirl - so many possibilities with this one, so many photos to choose from!
