This week: Winter is coming and all those cool colors chill me so much that a nice hot cup of coffee might be just what I need. So this time "Coffee" is our subject. Think about what you want to get across in your shot: coffee as a social time, the aroma, the colors and tones, the process of making it, part of a busy day, etc.
![]() Yes, it really happened and nothing broke! This week, our winner will pick up a snazzy SnapR 10 camera bag from Black Rapid! So make sure you name your images correctly, and that you follow all the guidelines! ![]() As always, rules: Just a note to new posters: DO NOT start a new thread for your post. Please just hit the reply button at the bottom of any current post and put your image there. 1. Your original image you submit should be taken on or between the 2nd to the 16th of November 2011. Each week as an assignment closes on the Wednesday, it will be AUTOMATICALLY deemed *CLOSED* after 8am GMT (3AM EST) and any posts after that time will not be eligible for the assignment competition. Don't wait until the last minute to post! 2. Your post must include "Coffee" as the title or in the text (to show your permission to count it for the contest) and the date the picture was taken (to show that it is a valid entry). 3. EXIF data should be intact. It helps if you can include the main points (including camera, lens, date taken, ISO, shutter speed and aperture) in the text of your message. 4. Only one entry per member (if you can't restrain yourself until the end of the first week you can post two or three separate pictures but your entry should be in a separate post and the only marked with the text above). It must be an original image taken by you. 5. Remember the cross-site image size limit (740px on the longest side). 6. If the image does not exist in post at the end of the contest, it is disqualified. If you modify anything on flickr and re-save the image then the link is broken and the message needs edited to link the picture again before it will be included in the contest. For everyone, please do not repeat other people's photos by quoting them until the contest is over. If you want to comment on or discuss an entry you can use a link to it (or just delete the picture from the quoted text). 7. If you are looking for the winners of the mini-contest, please check the front page of the DPS blog the following week (EST) or here. Next week: "The Golden Hour". If you are not sure what the golden hour is, it refers to the first and last hour of sunlight each day, just around sunrise and sunset. These are the two times of the day that the quality of light is particularly good for photography. The diffuse, warm softness of the light is less contrasty and has fewer harsh shadows. In this assignment, just running out to take a shot will not work as well. You might like to take a day or two to go out and observe the light at these two times of the day. Watch how it hits trees, buildings, and people's faces. Consider the place you want to photograph and whether the morning sun or evening sun light it the best. Let's not get "snap happy" with our cameras this week. Really take the time to plan your shot, whether landscape or portrait, and if the light is not working for you one day, then try again the next. Once you chose your subject, take several shots during your golden hour. The light will change rapidly and have different effects. Change your position as you shoot and change the angle you shoot your subject. Sun behind or to the side? Remember composition and subject interest still count! This assignment excited me since I am such a coffee junkie. I knew right away I would probably process this photo since I wanted to show that there was nothing "ho hum" about coffee.
I hope Santa takes this as a hint...the ultimate Christmas present! All the bells and whistles for that perfect cup of coffee! ![]() DPS assignment - Coffee by Exdeltalady, on Flickr Date taken - November 7, 2011 f/5.6 1/6 second ISO 200 Used Photomatix and Adjust 4

![]() Coffee Land. I wanted to do a different take on coffee, seeing as I don't drink the beverage myself. I created tiny mountains and a lake with a sandy beach. The snow is two types of creamer while the mountains themselves are coffee grounds, and the lake is soy milk. The wind in the open windowsill created some great 'snowfall' bokeh. Construction time was about 45 minutes. Camera: Canon EOS 7D Date Taken: 12.02pm on 9 nov, 2011 Lens: 18-135 mm at 135 mm Shutter Speed: 1/13th sec or .077 Aperture: f/13.0 ISO Speed: 400
