First of all - I'm not a moderator, I'm not even that very active (see my low number of posts) - so I'm probably way out of my league writing this.
But I'm an avid DPS forum reader - and I always go through the entire assignment threads to find inspiration. I'm really glad Sime introduced the new rules for commenting (even though some obviously hasn't bothered to read them)! Not only must it be hard for the mods to wade through all those duplicate images - it's also annoying for the rest of us who pay attention to the assignment threads. I'm glad that some of you have tried to find alternative commenting solutions, but now, I'm gonna be rude and throw out a suggestion: How about skipping the comments altogether (at least until the assignment is over)? (And, while we're at it: all the questions one could easily find the answers to!) There's a separate critique section on the forum, where comments and feedback is actively sought after. And if an assignment shot is blowing you off your feet, there are several ways to let the photographer know without spamming the forum. Many of us use Flickr, Picasa or other photo sharing services, where comments can be placed in direct connection to the photo. This way, all comments about one certain shot will be gathered in one place - and it's always easy to see the subject for the praise. And if the shot in question is uploaded directly to the forum, there's always the option of sending a forum message to the photographer. It'll probably feel like more of a compliment with a personal message, and you'll be sure that the intended receiver gets the message (instead of having to plow through 50+ forum pages). I know I'm sounding like a grumpy bastard here, and I'm sorry. I AM a grumpy bastard. I too like getting positive feedback on my work. I too feel like shouting WOOOOOW! when I see some of your amazing shots. But I can hardly be the only one frustrated about going through post after post with "Good one!", "Nice shot!", "I used to have one of those", "You look exactly like my uncle!!" and so on - quoting pictures or not. (Some seems very eager to win that camera!) So how about we focus on posting relevant assignment photos, and quit filling up the thread with irrelevant stuff like... well... like this post right here. I'm sorry for taking up the space, but phew - that felt good! (I would normally post this in the "General Chit Chat" section, according to forum etiquette, but I have a feeling that many in here just follow the assignment threads).
