This week: "Spice". Whether you take this word as a noun or in a more descriptive way is up to you. Just remember this is a family friendly forum and if it is a little too descriptive, it may belong in the Nude section (and as such, won't be eligible for the contest). Remember, just taking a shot without thought rarely results in an interesting image. All the assignments about composition and lighting are background for what you do when we have a simple subject assignment.
![]() As always, rules: Just a note to new posters: DO NOT start a new thread for your post. Please just hit the reply button at the bottom of any current post and put your image there. 1. Your original image you submit should be taken between the 19th of May and the 2nd of June. Each week as an assignment closes on the Wednesday, it will be AUTOMATICALLY deemed *CLOSED* after 8am GMT ( 3am EST) and any posts after that time will not be eligible for the assignment competition. Don't wait until the last minute to post! 2. Your post must include B]"Spice"[/B] (to show your permission to count it for the contest) and the date the picture was taken (to show that it is a valid entry). 3. EXIF data should be intact. It helps if you can include the main points (including camera, lens, date taken, ISO, shutter speed and aperture) in the text of your message. 4. Only one entry per member (if you can't restrain yourself until the end of the first week you can post two or three separate pictures but your entry should be in a separate post and the only marked with the text above). It must be an original image taken by you. 5. Remember the cross-site image size limit (740px on the longest side). (If it's wider than the image above, it's disqualified) 6. If the image does not exist in post at the end of the contest, it is disqualified. If you modify anything on flickr and re-save the image then the link is broken and the message needs edited to link the picture again before it will be included in the contest. For everyone, please do not repeat other people's photos by quoting them until the contest is over. If you want to comment on or discuss an entry you can use a link to it (or just delete the picture from the quoted text). 7. If you are looking for the winners of the mini-contest, please check the front page of the DPS blog Saturday late afternoon (EST) and here. Next week: "Cemeteries" I don't know about you, but I find them a peaceful place. There are fascinating ones the world over. Your shot can be a wide angle landscape, a close-up pointing out the architectural detail, b&w or color. Maybe it will tell a story or tug at your emotions. Early morning of late day shots will get lighting into play. Take the time to wander around a bit check out the angles. |

To me, the lime in a gin and tonic adds the "spice"...
![]() Camera: Pentax K100D Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160) Aperture: f/11.0 Focal Length: 200 mm Date and Time (Original): 2010:05:20 23:26:04 Strobist info - Vivitar 285hv on 1/16 bare behind the bottle of gin, Pentax 540fgz on 1/4 power with a light blue gel (to match the bottle) camera right with a shoot through umbrella as well. Flashes triggered using Cactus V2s triggers. I used my remote and pressed the button just slightly after I dropped the lime from above. It took me a number of tries to get the timing right, so by the time I was done I added some gin to the tonic in the glass and cleaned up my mess

Salt Macro
![]() Well... technically more 'mineral' than 'spice', I nonetheless use table salt to spice up a bland dish. Plus, it looked way cool with the double-lens reverse macro technique In fact, the Netflix envelope I used as the background even looks pretty cool!Camera: Nikon D40 Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100) Aperture: f/8.0 Focal Length: 200 mm (+50mm reversed) ISO Speed: 800 Taken on May 25, 2010

It usually takes me the entire time of the assignment to come up with a shot. But, when I saw that this was the next assignment, I took this picture before I even came up with a shot for the last one. Thinking that the date would be out of range, I kept it in mind. However, when I looked at the date stamp it said May 19th...which is in the date range so here it is..sorry to ramble. Just excited to get a photo in this soon!
