Noir photography has been a favorite of mine for a couple of years now. In fact, even before seeing this assignment (one I've considered suggesting for awhile now), I was working on a new image this week. Will post later.

In the meantime, please view my Flickr set of noir photography and would appreciate any thoughts.

Jersey Noir - a set on Flickr

You'll see in the set that I've also experimented with noir in color. Less traditional, but can be done.

Pardon the newbie question, but I haven't done well with self-photographing -- how do you focus? Are you using automatic? I usually use manual but maybe you need auto for this type of thing? And I guess a cable release would be good, huh, instead of a timer ... not sure I got one with the camera ...

Just trying to not pull out the guns for this one. My luck I would actually shoot someone and get it recorded.

Default Assignment: Film Noir April 21- May 5

Femme Fatale

Film Noir DPS

Ok... so I hope I am not breaking any rules this way but this is actually two photos pieced together (oh and if this is a problem I have the single shots that compile this photo and will gladly add one of those instead) ... I've put the EXIF info up for both (even if they are excatly the same) and both were taken on April 29th 2010. About enough time for a costume and make-up change elapsed between one and the other. And as far as lighting... Well since I knew I was going to be putting two shots together I tried to keep that as under controll as possible. It was pretty simple... a clip on lamp lying on the floor behind the bookshelf you can't see in the photo to cast long shadows and no flash... The rest of it was a bit of post editing to up the contrast and the 'grittyness'

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
Exposure: 0.125 sec (1/8)
Aperture: f/5.0
Focal Length: 39 mm
ISO Speed: 3200
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire
Lens: 18-55 IS 3,5+5,6

Default Film Noir

I took this shot in a theater entrance, the overhead light casting on the walls intrigued me, I went to PS and did some adjustments, I think it falls into the catagory.
