i caught a show of a band i've liked for a few years over the weekend and started chatting with them after sound check. they mentioned that they were looking for more live shots as well as some promotional shots and i suggested i could probably lend a hand.
they're a hilarious band and make fun of a lot of things. any ideas on situations to photograph them in? i've photographed bands live before and don't foresee any problems with that, but i've never really set up a photoshoot before.

thanks!

I have no idea sorry, perhaps if we had more details about the band?

Either way, i'd love to know how the shoot turns out, and post your results here for us to see :)

Look at other band photography and draw up two lists. One of things that inspire you and the other of cliches you want to avoid.

With band photography there are a lot of cliches (eg. everybody standing in a line in front of a brick wall, etc). However, hopefully the inspiration list will have enough material to spark fresh ideas that don't, on inspection, turn out to be cliches.

Try lying on your back with a fisheye lens pointing upward. Have the band members stand around you in a circle. Have them looking down at the lens like they're looking into a hole with something weird in it. Just a crazy suggestion.
