Hello everyone,

I'm getting back in to semi-serious amateur photography, with a Rebel XTi being the starting point of my "equipment". I'm on a fairly restricted budget, so I have to plan out everything appropriately. I'm going to be using the kit lens (18-55/f3.5-5/6) for a while, but am hoping to quickly add a fairly longer length lens to my collection as well. That's going to put a major ding in my "fund".

I'm going to need some kind of image management and editing software, and it looks like I've narrowed down my choices to either Adobe Elements or Lightroom. Both are just within my budget (Photoshop definitely isn't), but I'm not sure which would serve me better.

While I don't plan to do much direct image editing, it would be nice to have the option, so that leans me towards Elements.

But, I really like all the cataloging and color control that Lightroom allows.

Of course, Photoshop is my dream goal, but there's no way I can get the price past the family finance minister for at least a year.

Do you think I could get by with Lightroom and something like Gimp, or should I be leaning towards elements and just deal with a little less control of curves and colors? I understand that there's no "right" answer for this. I'm interested in opinions and what you would do if you had to make the choice. Thanks!

The Gimp gives you lots of editing control and will cost you nothing.

I'm not familiar with either Elements or Lightroom but, if Lightroom gives you the general workflow and image management you require then it sounds like that, plus The Gimp for when you do want to play with things like curves, levels and various filters, would serve well.
