i have had the 50mm 1.8 pretty much since i bought my latest camera and i love it for what it is (a cheap, fast prime), but always hear people saying how this is their walk around lens. i find it's too close for what i look to shoot and stepping back a few feet isn't always an option. does anyone have either of the two lenses listed below? any reason why not to pick up one of these?

one thing to keep in mind is that once you get below 50 (I think), you start getting a fair amount of distortion (think fisheye). That distortion can lend itself to some spectacular shots, but isn't necessarily something you want in all of your pictures.

Though I don't own these lenses and don't know whether or not this is the case with them. Any owners out there who can testify?

depending on the lens i'm pretty sure that usually happens a lot wider than 28mm. i have zero flaring/curvature like a fisheye lens with my 17-40 f4L lens.

Have you taken a look at the fredmiranda reviews? It can be a pain plowing through all of them, but by the time you're done, you get a relatively good feel for the strengths and weaknesses of a specific lens.
