I had two Canon P&S cameras before I decided to upgrade to the Rebel XT last March. My criteria was a camera that was lightweight, easy to use, would continue to use my P&S batteries, and that I could grow with. I was not disappointed.

The Rebel XT was easy to learn, providing basic photography needs - RAW, basic and creative modes, and lens options. The kit lens is a great starter lens and I still use it as an all-around lens. I like the fact that the camera is lightweight - easy to carry when hiking. The size fits into my female hands perfectly (note: I have a male friend who upgraded to a 30d and prefers the larger size). I am able to quickly change modes and settings - the buttons on the camera are easy to use and provide fast short-cuts. Another benefit to the Rebel XT was that I got a starter camera that I am still learning about for a great price.

With every camera, there are cons. I don't like that there isn't spot metering. I also wish that there were more ISO options. But to me, neither of these cons have hindered my shooting. And having a self cleaning sensor would be nice.

With the XTi now introduced, I would recommend purchasing that one for all of the upgrades to the XT. However, if price is an issue, you will not be disappointed with the XT. It is a sturdy camera that is great for the casual or amatuer photographer.

I got the rebel Xt about a month ago, I got the camera because I wanted to expand my skills from the point and shoot models. This has so far been a wonderful startup camera for me that has let me learn a great deal about exposure and focal lenght and many other techniqes past just point and shoot. I'm a college student and had to save up for this camera so being a bit cheaper then the xti was ideal. I have still much to learn but have had nothing but a great experience with this camera and would reccomend it to all my friends who are thinking about upgrading to a dSLR. The quality of my images is great and the camera in general is easy to learn and pick up on.

Canon Digital Rebel XT
Overall rating: 8.5 out of 10

Pros
Very user friendly, easy to maneuver; more control and better output than the standard point-and-shoot; sharp and colorful photos; Lightweight, easy to take with you anywhere; It’s nice that it has a flash. You don’t have to lug around an external flash wherever you go; Takes RAW images; Compatible with lots of EF lenses; The body is smaller, and since I have small hands, it fits me just fine. (If you have larger hands, it might feel small to you.)

Cons
The LCD is too small. You might think an image is in focus on the LCD, until you get it on your computer and notice how blurry it actually is. If the Rebel is your price range, go for the XTi with the larger LCD; The plastic casing is cheap, especially if you use an external flash or a large lens. It doesn’t feel like it could support extra weight.

Overall
I’ve had my XT since Fall 2006. For the price and performance, the Rebel XT is incredible. I don’t regret purchasing it as my first digital SLR. But if I had to do it over again, I would have paid the extra bucks for the XTi for larger LCD. Having the extra MP on the XTi wouldn’t have made a difference to me. Save your money and don’t buy the standard 18-55mm f/3.5 it comes with. Buy a nicer, faster lens. Even though I’ve outgrown the XT professionally (I also have a 5D), I still use the Rebel often as my “beater” body. It’s reliable and easy to use. I don’t have to think when I use it. It really is a great camera! This camera is for the person who needs more than just what a point-and-shoot can offer… a hobbyist or enthusiast. If you’re planning to do more professionally, save up for a professional-grade body.
