Rating so far: 10/10
Perfect for: Anyone new to DSLR, anyone who loves photography.
After having a Minolta SLR for man years, the time ad come to buy a digital camera. I couldn't go past getting a Digital SLR as I wanted the control an SLR rovides, so after reading many, many reviews and magazines and combined with what was on special around Christmas, I opted for the Sony Alpha 100 with the twin lens kit.
So far it has been brilliant, and this web-site has helped me get a lot more out of it than I would have otherwise-especially given that this is the first digital camera I have owned!!
It's so hard to write a review of a camera with so many features, especially when I have just move into DSLR where every feature is brilliant :-)
The software it comes with is quite good. Ease of use is great, feel in my hands is perfect. A great camera that :) has lived up to all reviews!
Battery life has be excellent and recharge is very fast. The only issue I have is how to clean the LCD display when you get sunblock all over it in the summer :-(

Did you notice any issues when using an external flash?

I have an old Minolta Maxxum 7000 and I believe the lenses can be used on the Alpha. Can anyone confirm this? This idea is the thing most driving me toward this camera for my first DSLR.
Thanks for any replies!
Could'nt agree more... I upgraded from a Fuji S7000i (my first digital camera) to the new Sony Alpha less than two weeks ago. I spent a lot of time researching and found the Alpha to be the best value for money when looking at the features I wanted in a DSLR. In addition to the 18-70 & 75-300 lenses that came with the kit, I bought a 11-18mm wide angle zoom that, so far, has been brilliant.
Here's some examples FYI....

Would you recommend this camera to a beginner?
how beginner are you??
meaning you do have a camera already just a point and shoot???
if you are wanting a DSLR.. really there is no wrong or right choice :)
What is important is how you like the feel of the camera in your hands i was a die hard minolta lover before they sold out and i do know the sony has all the minolta parts :) but after feeling the Nikon D50 in my hands i knew instantly that it was the right camera for me...
as far as is the sony ok for a beginner.. DSLRs do have far more options than a P&S and the menus can be confusing... but it is all a learning curve we are here to help...with any questions you may have also i cant point out how important it is to read the manuals.. and to practice practice practice its the only way you are going to learn :)

I have used a SLR before and am fairly experienced with it. But have been using just a digital elf but with child on way, etc. want to be able to really step up the quality of the photos.

I just went to the store today, wanting to feel a D400 in my hands to see if it fits, as I already normally decided on saving my money for this one. :) And while standing there, the lady explained to another couple about the Sony Alpha 100 and compared to the Canon D400. And she said that the Sony is better than the Canon...
So I listened to what she was telling: the Sony has a picture stabilizator, the Canon doesn't: My question now: I read about a fake stabilizator. Does the Sony have the "good" one?
She also said that the Sony has a better bajonet than the Canon, as the Canon ones is plastic...
Question: Does this really matter when you just have a lense about 300 mm? And is the Sony else comparable to the Canon?
Something I did now was looking Canon D400 and Sony Alpha up on the web.
And it looks as if the Sony has a slightly worse picture quality than the Canon.
Can anybody confirm that?
Thanks a lot for your help, guys!

I'm not personally familar with the Sony, but here are some side by side comparisons.
Try looking here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos400d%2Csony_dslra100&show=all

Thanks a lot for the links.
So the Sony has a "good" optical stablilizator. That is already worth a lot for me. Hopefully I get enough cash for my Birthday to be able to buy one ;)
Thanks again!

I do not own a Sony A100 but a friend does and loves it as she can use some of her old Minolta lenses. She is a professional photographer who used the F717 for many years before going to the A100.
There is an A100 group on Yahoo.com that you can subscribe to (free) that may be able to answer more of your questions. The URL is: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/a100group/

So I listened to what she was telling: the Sony has a picture stabilizator, the Canon doesn't
Actually, Canon has picture stabilizer, also known as Image Stabilizer. However, for Canon, the IS is built into the lens, not the body. Only some Canon lenses have IS. The bad bit about this is that you pay more ie 1 lens, 1 stabilizer, 2 lenses, 2 stabilizers therefore you pay more. The good bit is that each unit can be tailored to work best with the lens it is placed in.
She also said that the Sony has a better bajonet than the Canon, as the Canon ones is plastic...
Actually, the Canon body is plastic, but the lens mount is metal.
