Better late than never, but here is the 29th edition of What Would You Do.

For all the new people here, this is the thread where you get to practice and show off your post-processing skills on someone else's photograph. This week's photo is by Firemaine :)

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/scfd/419444271/" title="Screech Owl by firemaine, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/163/419444271_55bdfe8e17.jpg" width="500" height="439" alt="Screech Owl" /></a>

What you need to do is simple. Edit the photo however you want, come and post it back here and tell what you did and how you did it.

I'm always on the lookout for more pictures to use in these threads, so if you would like your picture to be featured, send me a PM with a link to the medium and large version of your photo (if you have it). That's it!

Now, let's see what you would do :D

Duplicated layer - Multiply to bring out colors
There wass till too much white for me so I used the dropper tool and picked a color on the owl and then painted a portion of the owl at 30% opacity.
Made the eyes a bit bigger by using the warp tool
Gave it a vignette and then increased the contrast and darkness

Hi Nicole,
I am not sure if you already do, but I had a suggestion that if someone submits an image, it might be a good idea to mention that person. Just a thought..

The images so far have been interesting to work with.. Good work :)

yeah she does that prince. This was from Firemaine.....but maybe a bold face type right before photo link might help a bit. Igotta an idea for this one....

this was a good one for me....learned a bit about blending two images to look consistent. I think i got it pretty good but long you don't look at the larger image zoomed in....
I call this one "It can't be this easy" as if the hawk is or whatever is looking at the owls like dinner and lunch!

Forgot my steps.....
First took the owl out with the selection tool. Quick and easy.
Then flipped it and created another image of that.
Took both the images of the owls and placed on an image I just got the other day of a hawk or kite in my neighbors tree. Placed them on branches that seemed right.
Adjusted them a bit by rotating them slightly in the transform menu to get them lined up right.
Then I sharpened the Hawk alot nd upped contrast to get it close to the owls appearance.
Then blurred background a bit.
Lastly I gave the owls a bit of shadow under their tail feathers.

Now looking at it i see the owls are too bright for the shot should had took them down a bit...good shot to play with Firemaine..... thanks for the submission.

I bet everyone is going to focus on the owl and ignore that fascinating flagpole or pipe it is standing on....

Instead, I've chosen to take that element of the picture and turn it into something that could be used as a texture elsewhere (multiple copying and then a curves adjustment to bring out more detail on the final composite).

wulf if you dont mind i am going to use this as a texture/background. I've been trying to make some that look sort of futuristic.

Aha!! I like that texture wulf.. would you mind telling us how to get it look so pro?:o

Yep, like xxpinballxx said, I do always mention who the image was sent in by. It's almost always right before the image (occasionally it may be slightly earlier than that if the person has a specific question/request). :)

I am sure you lost me there... :p

If anyone wants to use that texture, feel free. A really pro job would be tileable so you could use it as a seamless background; I didn't have time to attend to that. As described, it is just the flag pole copied and then the curves pushed to bring out a bit more detail.

Ok, I'm not that old that this sentence shouldn't make sense lol! Ok, to make up for your lack of reading you need to edit the photo in the first post for the thread ;)

Fun shot to work with this week! :)

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7845858@N05/2089545097/" title="What you would do #29 by ~Teewinot~, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2250/2089545097_60bc17bcab.jpg" width="433" height="500" alt="What you would do #29" /></a>

GOAL: Give the owl a tree to sit in!

What I did (in PSP XI):
-Cropped way down to the owl
-Selected around the owl
-Created a mask layer with the selection
-Created a new raster layer to put behind the owl
-Deselected the owl
-Added a background to the new raster layer (a photo I recently shot of ice crystals on my window...they sorta look like tree branches!)
-Gaussian blur (90) to mask layer (owl) to blend owl into its new surroundings
-Merged all layers
-Cloned/painted pole (what I now call a branch) all the way across to both edges of the frame.
-Cloned some "leafy branches" over the black thick branch to give it a real 3D feel.
-Desaturated 100%
-Unsharp mask (radius 75, strength 15)
-Adjusted histogram midtones (-10)
-Added a pinch of green tones
-Added white border

I thought that was from your ice crystals shot - they work really well used this way also.

I started out with one idea and I ended up with something totally different..as so often happens. Here is what I did:

Selected background with wand and replaced it with gradient layer mask
Darkened him up with a Curves layer as he seemed a little overexposed.
Added a moon I found on a stock photo website.
Applied a canvas texture
Added a gray border
