Does anyone out there have any first-hand experience with the Nikkor teleconverters? I've been reading some stuff about losing stops and making images soft for some lenses but I was hoping to get some feedback from someone that's used them.

The only experience with these I've had is with an old, old, old doubler, but I will say this: any extra space or glass you put between the end of your lens and the camera body will only decrease the amount of light that gets through.

If you haven't already, check out the DPS post on teleconverters (http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/the-pros-and-cons-of-using-tele-converters-extenders-on-your-dslr/).

i have had no hands on, BUT from all the research i have done... i want one.. it is best to use these on Prime lenses.. that's not to say you cant use them on say a 70-300 just the quality of the prime makes for a better photo.. one of my mentors told me also to be careful to make sure that the tele-con you are getting was MADE for the lens you are using... not 100% sure on this... tho.. my take on it was its best to get Nikon for Nikon lens.. sigma for sigma lenses as apparently if the fit is NOT right it can damage your glass...

you are right x1.4 will loose 1 stop X2 will loose 2 stops.. and yes as i said .. best on a prime ... as some lenses mainly telephotos are and can be soft...
