Here are some basic tips: A tripod will work wonders, as well as staying in the middle F-stops, usually F/11 for your aperture, and trying to find the best focal length for your lens. Each lens has its own sweet spot and with a little experimenting you can find yours. If you zoom all the way in or out you may have decreased quality. You might also consider using a remote or self-timer to prevent camera shake. That's about all the tips I have to offer.

like PnwGuy i use tripod and remote if suitable... also always use an Aperture of f8-f11 to get the sharpness... from 200-300mm range other wise its nasty soft focus... this is all on my Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto
