Have any of you tried creating OOBs? Out of Boundary (OOB) images give a three-dimensional illusion by creating a frame around part of the image, then having part of the original photograph break through that frame. Below is my first attempt...
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/randomconnections/379218584/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/177/379218584_ddda94c82d.jpg" width="500" height="391" alt="Tom Kayak OOB" /></a>
That's me kayaking on the Tuckaseegee River.
There is a Flickr Group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/oob/) that has some much, much better examples. It amazes me how creative these guys have gotten. Flickr photo Serrator (http://www.flickr.com/photos/serrator/) has posted an excellent tutorial (http://www.logicscape.com/oob_tutorials/) on his website.

I believe I am going to have to give this format a try. Looks neat.
Looks like you did good on your first attempt. Thanks for the info and link.
Only one and that wasn't particularly brilliant - more to make something of a very average photo than anything else:

Here is my attempt at OOB. A before and after photo. Not my photo, just borrowed one off the net, author unknown. I went a step further and used some channel work to bring in the tree branch. Need to work on my shadows a bit, but this was a tad fun to do.

Very nice! I'm finding that actions shots like this work best. I did one of a pipe organ with the pipes sticking out of the frame, and it just didn't have the pizzazz of the other shots.
As for the frames, before you add the drop shadow, select the layer that has your frame, then go to Edit - Transform - Warp. On that setting you can bend the edges of the frame a bit. That's the simplest version, using Photoshop CS2. I can't remember if warping is available in earlier versions.
If you want to make it REALLY realistic, you would need to do a corresponding warp on the background image inside the frame. The trick is to warp the background without warping the part protruding from the boundary. I haven't had time to play with that, yet, but I think you might need to merge the frame with part of the background so that you get a consistent warp.

Can you create OOBs with Elements? Or do you have to use the full Photoshop version?
I have Elements 5.0 and would love to try to create an OOB - if it's possible.:)

My first attempt. A couple of things to work out but I don't think it's too bad for a rookie. Not sure why gradient layer is still showing some of original image.

I have Photoshop 7 and Elements 5.0 I did OOB in PS7. I tried it in PSE but ran into confusion with the layer masks as masks are done differently in PSE, and to be honest I don't have a good understanding of masks.
I'll see if I can get it to work in PSE and will post and let you know. I may not get to it until this weekend.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I forgot all about it. OOb's was one of the main reasons for me buying Paintshop Pro. I just haven't had the time. Here is my first attempt. I had a little problem with the drop shadow, but I don't think it turned out too awfully bad.:(

I have never tried this before and I have to say, it is great fun to do. Here is my first attempt following the tutorial mentioned in the first posting. The original to this was taken at Knebworth House (UK)
There is a problem with banding on the gradient fill which I have to say I have no idea why but I am still happy with this as a first time. Now for the warped frame
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14706839@N08/1659303300/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2163/1659303300_7093e407cd.jpg" width="500" height="482" alt="OODdino" /></a>
Addition...
Well, here we go with the warped version (banding on original was because it saved as a low quality jpeg). I know it is a bit rough around the edges and maybe now I look at it, I could have moved the frame back a bit to get the front leg coming out (maybe for version2). As I have Elements 4 which does not do layer masks or warp transform, I have used Serif PhotoPlus11 for some of the editing swapping the file in psd from one package to the other and back so that between them I had all the tools. All in all a fun evening and much learned.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. This reminds me that after I posted my first OOB, I did go ahead and change it up a bit. I deleted the background and then saved it as a gif so that when I post the picture on a webpage that has a colored background, the background shows thru instead of having a white area around the picture. See below...
This is the original...
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i69/smc1377/dps/oob3.jpg
This is the gif with the deleted background...
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i69/smc1377/dps/oob4.gif
Notice how the second one doesn't have the white space around it so it appears more realistic.

I think it is a great photo for the OOB idea, capturing the boys' sense of adventure.
One element I wasn't keen on was that the grass also escapes the bounds, making it look (to me) like the job wasn't quite finished. However, it is a more interesting background than plain grey. What about using the OOB idea to allow the boys to escape from one photo to another with distinctively different grass and background?

Just a couple things you could have done a little better. I don't know what the original looks like but you don't want to have the frame leaning quite so much. Right now, it looks like he's walking onto it, when it should look like he's walking into it. The frame would need to be above his head. Then, his rear leg looks a little odd. You may want to include some of the surrounding grass.

Thank you for the advice Digidave... I guess it is all a matter of perspective.
Here is a thumbnail of the original and an attempt to capture your perspective. On the second one I did not edit out the 'extra' parts, left dangling when bull elephants play in the water :) However, I have tried to make it appear as if the water flows into the frame as well.

Just thought I would share this with everyone. This technique lends itself to endless possibilities. This is one of them, could it be called a true OOB? ..

or is a round frame better?

Thank you Lori, I started doing it as a normal OOB with the caption 'stepping out of time' but decided the 'stepping through time' angle was better.

Love that one, the facial expressions lends to the moment!

Great pic! I think it also would of looked good if the frame was further back and it was transforming from 1/2 B/W to 1/2 color (or reverse) either way, great job.
