Here's what came out of the camera:

This is what I really wanted:

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
2s f/22.0 at 100.0mm iso400

I did this with my 100mm Macro lens. Lighting was from a nearby window. I put the 20D on a tripod so that I could let the shutter open as long as it needed, and used a very small aperature to get the best focus I could. As you can see, the rose was fading fast - some of that I fixed with the crop, and some of it I had to use the clone tool in Photoshop. The hardest part was cloning in the veins where there was a blotch at the top left.

Wow, I can honestly say that I can't even tell where you had to clone the part of the petal. I had to look back at the original. Nicely done.

Thanks. I thought the image was worth spending the time to get that fixed right, and I think the effort paid off. I appreciate your comments!

benttop,

Might have taken out the two little bits of background top right, but it wouldn't make it better than it is. Tools in the right hands, magic.

Nice job. I think "digital zoom" on cameras is a waste of time but, done with care like this in the post-processing stage can make a big difference to the final appearance of an image, helping bring viewers closer to what you want to highlight about the subject.

Admirable attention to details. I would have not personally cloned the veins, but you are correct, it resulted to the image you had in mind. It certainly is a better image.
I also own a Canon 100mm f2.8 macro but has not tried using it at f22. After seeing your image, I guess I should.

We should all try everything at least once! :) Well, my wife might argue with that, but we're keeping the discussion to photography. :)
