View Full Version : Shooting the moon

I've got dozens of shots of the moon on my hard drive. I think I'm obsessed. Looking to build a telescope soon and have a adapter for my camera.
Sad thing is, I have to crop my moon shots to get anything worth it with my current kit.

Yeah, you have to do a lot of cropping with a 300mm lens to get anything of a decent size...

What kind of telescope are you planning to build? A Dobsonian? If so, take pictures of that, as well!
Although not obsessed about it, I do like to shoot the moon, too. Below is one shot I took through a very old Celestron C-90:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/randomconnections/370131235/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/153/370131235_f1342530c2.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="full moon 2 Photoshopped" /></a>
Here's the setup, with my Nikond D50 attached:

I do not have a good moon shot, but the one I have was taken with the Sigma 70-300mm, too, also cropped.

It's harder to do than I thought.

This is my 3rd attempt at this. Tonight I took about 15 pics at different f/stops & exposure times. I got 1 decent one. Taken at 1/125 secs. at f/11. Converted to B/W & a touch of Unsharpmask. Taken with a Tamron Lens at 300mm with cropping.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/digidave/378042201/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/129/378042201_06e073dc2f.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="DSC_1636" /></a>
I did some more playing around last night but, with only the 18-55mm kit lens on my D40 at the moment, I think I'm going to have to wait for one of those nights when the moon seems to hang pendulously low in the sky! The results were better than the night before but nothing approaching those above.

Gunsotsu, don't worry about the cropping. Hell, I have to crop even with my 400mm lens:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/82/215442757_43590aec56.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/inkista/215442757/)
Rebel XT. EF 400mm f/5.6L USM.
f/5.6. 1/560s. ISO 400. Tripod & tripod collar. mirror-lockup. timer.
I highly recommend playing with a tripod, timer, and mirror-lockup functions for this, and going for a faster shutter speed to eliminate camera shake. Even though you're shooting at night, remember that the moon is a bright sunlit object--you can probably go with a higher shutter speed, lower iso, and smaller aperture than you think.
Also, if you're not using a super-sharp L zoom, I'd recommend stopping down to f/8, and backing off a little from the extreme end of the range, to get the best sharpness you can out of your lens. It did wonders when I used my old 75-300.

I haven't quite mastered it yet - even the slightly extended range of the lens I am borrowing at the moment (Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO) doesn't get me as close as I would like. However, that extra 20mm over the kit 18-55mm on my Nikon D40 is still an improvement, even if still not a patch on some of the other shots here:

That's as good as it gets unless we get one of those nights where the moon seems to hang really low or I get some way of zooming in closer.

Had a chance to shoot the Moon in the morning before I went to office at 6 AM. After taken 40x shots with standard Canon PS S3 IS (no filter & no tripod), I selected 3 of them with different exposures. Layered those 3 photos in photoshop, curve, sharpen and crop.

My 1st try -
April Fool's Day (Full Moon was April 2nd)
http://shoeless.phanfare.com/show/external/245511/326761/15907234/file.jpg
The moon was still waxing to full, but a clear night so I shot. Many different settings, handheld (didn't have a tripod yet), 18-250mm lens. This one came out best; unfortunately, I didn't have a good editing program then & Picasa stripped the EXIF data so I have to go thru the same experimental process next time. :o
Below is some moon trivia I found for those preparing to give this a try:
Next Full Moons- June 30/ July 30/ Aug 28/ Sep 26/ Oct 26/ Nov 24/ Dec 24
Honey Moon
The June full moon was called the Mead or Honey moon. The name derives from the hives being full of honey at this time of the year. The honey would have been fermented and made into mead. Traditionally, a honey drink was taken after wedding ceremonies held on the Summer Solstice. This is the derivation of 'honeymoon'.
Blue Moon
Due to the moon's cycle being 29½ days, there are occasionally - as in July 2004 - two full moons in one month (only happens on average every 2.7 years). Then the second moon of the month is called a 'blue moon'. The next blue moon will be in June 2007. There will be two blue moons in 2018.
Dark Moon
When two new moons occur in a month, the second is called a 'dark moon'. The new moon is also sometimes called the dark moon - at this phase there is no illumination on the earth's side.
Harvest Moon
The full moon nearest to the Autumn Equinox is called the 'Harvest moon'. This is because for several nights it appears large and bright in the early evening, bringing farmers valuable extra time to gather in their harvest. The Celtic year was once divided into 13 months - one for each moon occuring during the year.

This is an image I took three years ago with my 10D and Meade ETX90 telescope. The image hasn't been cropped so the moon is about full frame. The effective focal length is 1250mm at f13.8. I didn't use mirror lockup, timer, or even a remote shutter - which is why is it a little blurry. I have just recently got my telescope back from being fixed, so will try and get a sharper picture.
Cheers Gav

I also enjoy taking images of the moon, which is a little odd, because I am 14!
I use a 90-300mm canon lens with a 2x teleconverter on the below image.
the biggest problem i find is focusing. A great deal of the images I have taken are very softly focused. any suggestions?

What equipment were you using? Taking a glance at what is in your profile, I would suggest the D40X set to take images at full size and your 55-200mm at the long end of the range.
You may need to manually set the focus and, if the results are washed out adjust settings for less exposure.

Didn't even know this thread existed! I've been able to shoot 3 nights in a row now, looks like I'm on the right track - tripod, 300mm focal length... shooting at about 1/160 or 1/125 of a second f5.6... ISO 100... I noticed a couple are shooting at f8 or f16 at lower shutter speeds, is there a benefit to this? Here's tonite's shot:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/haeretik/2051285353/" title="10606 - Half moon (day 3) by Haeretik, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2295/2051285353_20db3342fe.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="10606 - Half moon (day 3)" /></a>
Comments or tips are welcome of course...
You have to experiment with your lens to see where you get the sharpest result. If you are using a tripod you don't need a particularly fast shutter speed (although, hold it open long enough and you will catch the moon moving!).
You might also find that you get a sharper result a little way off the maximum zoom on your lens (although, again, it will vary from lens to lens).
Finally, it often helps to finish by cropping the image, making the moon larger in the frame (in effect, creating the illusion of greater zoom than your lens can manage).

Yeah the first night I tried, anything over 1/40s or so tended to be a huge white halo... haven't quite got around to the stage of manually playing with f-stops... but I'd imagine a higher f-stop would allow for a slower shutter speed... would also make sense, that photo actually had clouds in it as well, but if I understand correctly a lower f-stop increases the focal point on one object as opposed to many?
You might also find that you get a sharper result a little way off the maximum zoom on your lens (although, again, it will vary from lens to lens).
Hmmm interesting, will give this a go, I know that as far as the focus though, it's not focused at inifinite focus, but a bit back.

Haven't got that far yet, I am kinda partial to the framing though... maybe it's just me ;) I'll try and post one later...
Thanks for the comments/tips!
There's nothing wrong with having the moon small in the frame but it can also be very satisfying when you get the effect of zooming right up close by cropping.

Here is my best moon shot so far - I think this is about as close as my 70-300mm will take me:

Here's my shot of the Harvest Moon from back in September. Heavily cropped and from my 18-135mm which is my longest lens right now.

Wulf, have you tried sharpening? I did a ton of post-processing and I sharpened (as well as converted to B&W) when I was struggling to get the moon with my EF 75-300 III. I probably overdid the sharpening, but the results made me reasonably happy:

Also, maybe try shooting at the lowest iso you can?
It had some sharpening. Lower ISO would help - I hadn't changed my setting back after taking some shots indoors.

This was taken a couple of years back. cropped ,Sharpened, Auto levels/contrast.

I took this one on the first day of the new year. I don't have a zoom lens so I went for a wide shot instead. I made it lighter a bit so you could see the windchime in the top/middle of the shot.

Maybe a middle crop would accentiate the moon more, otherwise nice focus and shot

This is a shot that I just shot . Its blurry I know . I shot it using my fujifilm S5600 camera with a 55mm 2.0X tele lens . Is this lens used for long shots or close ? Was shot on night mode without flash and on a tripod.

Hey, cool. Moon shots. I have one that I tried hand held, but during the day. I was out the other night, but I don't have a tripod yet, and it just wouldn't autofocus (non-SLR). I stood out there for a bit trying to remember how to manually focus before I went back in to try to remember where my manual was so I could look up manual focus, hehe.

There's a shot on one of the first pages of this thread from May, with a beautiful colored sky and moon. I remember that day thinking I need a better camera back then because I wanted a photo of that.

I've posted this somewhere before but I thought I would share again. This was taken a little while ago with my S3IS before Santa brought me my upgrade :D
Still like it......

here's some moon shots from down in australia, just after christmas. taken with a Canon 350D attached prime focus to an ED80 refractor telescope (focal length:600mm). the 'big' shot of the moon is with a 2x magnifier through the scope. all done manually.

Joining an astronomy club will give you tons and tons of opportunities to shoot the moon and other sky stuff. If money's a problem, they tend to have really excellent telescopes as well. <a href="http://www.nckas.org/astrophotos/student-images/">This page</a> gives examples of photographs taken in my astronomy group. The moon shot there is really beautiful (Patrick even managed to get the faint aurora borealis we saw to show up beautifully with a 15 sec exposure).

It's actually quite soft when you crop in on it, so I've been intending to take another shot at some point, but it was good enough for my needs, so it can wait until a warmer night, when I can stand to spend hours outside shooting the starscape :D
It'll also give me a nice chance to play with my old 500mm mirror lens ^.^

all these shots are amazing!
I decided last night to snap a couple... since the moon was so bright it was keeping me awake.
It was very cold (-45 Celcius) with the windchill while I was trying to snap these... so I didn't really take a long time to worry about compositition really....
Here is one of the better ones...
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/canadianmum/2209321633/" title="Moonlight by Canadian Mum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2320/2209321633_38da407314.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Moonlight" /></a>
I think it is neat to compare my shot to those from different places around the world... and see the difference in alignment.

Hello everyone. I just bought my first real camera (DSLR) about 3 weeks ago. I'm still learning about photography and I didn't think these kinds of photos could be made without help from NASA or something. I read about different ways of shooting it and decided on this.
http://bytecrafter.com/photos/moon/fullmoon.jpg
I would like it to be a little bit more sharp, but I'm not sure how to go about getting that. My current settings are:
Nikon D40x w/ Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED
F-Stop: f/5.6
Exposure Time: 1/125 sec.
ISO Speed: ISO-100
Focal Length: 135mm (Max for my lens.)
Email me if you think you can help.
Thanks!
PS, This is the first photo I'm posting online, anywhere.
