I am looking forward to buy Nikon D80 camera. i have done enough homework about the specs but the price difference on the net are driving me crazy. the most reliable links, like amazon, best-buy etc are selling it from $700 - $950 range. BUT there are two sites which selling same camera (body only) for $299. how can they sell it for that price, while official Nikon website quote price range from $700 - $1000. whats the catch? i hope not my money or credit card info!!:)

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head actually. Make sure that you check out those stores that are selling it so cheap on ResellerRatings (http://www.resellerratings.com). That will give you a good idea of whether or not the store is reputable.

Back in the spring I paid $985.95 plus shipping from Adorama. I'll only buy the big stuff from them, and B&H. I also heard KEH is a excellent place to buy used gear.
One thing to remember. If its too good to be true......................

I have brought off KEH.com very nice easy going no hassles... with a nice return policy
they also sell new gear too but only to USA not other countries,,, once you make a online sale there you get your own personal sales assistant.. that is available to you for any questions and all that good stuff
DONT touch anything that under the 700 range for just the body they will only screw you over (:

Check some of the stuff I posted about this recently - as I just went through the same thing you are doing in my quest for a D80.
Basically the $299 one is a real price for the "body only". But by body only they mean that, no battery, charger, caps, etc... Oh, and they will never ship you just the body, you have to buy the "included" charger for $199 and the battery for $150, and the cap for "$25" and shipping for $80 and the mandatory "insurance" for $60. And then you likely get a refurbished unit or a demo with no warranty. The point is, stick to either the expensive reliable sellers or buy a used one from someone you can trust.
I bought a used one from a guy at Nikonian.com. He had bought it six weeks ago when his D200 was in for service. He took about 600 pictures with it in his studio and does not need it any more as he has ordered a D300 and has his D200 back. I got it for $700 including shipping. It is just as good as new for a nice price.

You can snag a refurb at Adorama for $750. Add a 5 year mack warranty for about $50, and you're set. You might find a refurb at B&H too.

i bought my D80 for $329...body, only. not that i really cared about the battery and the charger as I already have a nikon d50 and the battery is pretty much the same (if not i'll buy one for $20). They actually didn't try to upsell me to anything (yet). It does say the caps and the screen protector are included. I'll let u know what happens....

For any Canadians out there, I bought my Nikon D80 back in the spring and Henry's had the best rates. (I'm in Ontario.) and were even willing to swing a deal when I was at the store. :)

I'm also thinking about the D80, but I was advised to also look at the D200 as there isn't that much of a price difference.
Thoughts?

The only reason why I wont get the d200 is because it takes compact flash memory cards and I have sd memory cards for my d50...the d80 takes sd thankfully
