Hi! I just purchased this camera as an upgrade to my Sony DSC-P10. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions in regards to this camera? It has a lot of features and I feel that I need to read the manual about 50 times just to learn a few operations... :p

I too am a new owner of the H5. Hello, Hello, Hello. So happy to see you on this forum. Yes, an invaluable tool, is The White Paper by A.A.Katz. It's a concise guide to set up and use of the H series cameras, I don't know how to copy and paste it. (that's a long story) so here's the url www.aakatz.com/h1whitepaper/ This and the Sony Talk Forum specific to H2,5 have helped me immensely. I sure hope to stay in touch with you so we can learn together on this new adventure of owning and using this camera. My Flickr site is under 'noseum'. No H5 pics yet. I still have to set it up.:)

I printed out the white pages at work (shhh!) and have read the whole thing. I found it very informative and useful but I will need to read parts over again I'm sure.
I took pictures over the holidays and now have to transfer them to my computer and see what I get. :)

A nice cloud formation by DSC H2

Interesting formation, Nice eye for details. Seems kind of fuzzy is that on purpose. I'm finding this camera needs a lot of practice. As opposed to my 'smaller' Canon SD800. Now that to me is a P/S.

I am very glad you joined, as their is no one else on this site that uses the H Series, that they've shown anyway. So welcome, I would like to encourage you by saying yes, it takes a lot of practice, but is well worth it. As you probably already know this cam makes amazing images. With two to three teleconverters to boot. So welcome and enjoy! FC

Do you know about the White Paper, by AAKatz. Check it out, it's a wealth of material on this camera....See You Here. FC Welcome.

Yes White Paper, by AAKatz is really a good site and very helpful, but still its cant figure the manual focus mode. If you could find it, it would be very helpful for me.
Thanks in Advance,

I can't wait for the price drop to get either a H2 or H5 that is expected due to the release of the H7 and H9.

I know how you feel. I really want to get the H9, but can't afford or justifiy, having just got the H5 in Dec. I've actually thought about selling my H5 but the add-on lenses for the H9 are a different diameter! It would mean (I think) a whole new system, which I definitely cannot afford. Good Luck, any ideas??

What would you be looking to get out of the H5?

Do you mean the H9? If so, I wish I was capable of delineating it here, but alas I am not. As with the H5, in reading the Sony talk forum threads, the improvements that have been made in this camera make it worth the upgrade. The Sony talk forum is on dpreview.com under forums - Sony. Check there if your interested, there are more knowledgeable people than myself there.FC

I was asking how much would you want for your H5 if you wanted to upgrade?

I wouldn't discuss that here. FC

Hi all, I'm new to the thread but I have owned a Sony DSC H-5 for 14 months now. Earlier this past week my camera was sitting on the coffee table and the shutter button just spontaneously popped up in the air and landed on my couch. I was sitting on the couch when it happened and I heard it hit so I know there was no one touching the camera when it happened. Fortunately I had taken out a 4 year product service plan when I purchased the camera and I have gotten the store to send it off for repair. The problem is that I am going to San Diego on October 3rd on vacation and was looking forward to taking hundreds of photos at Sea World and the San Diego Zoo. The camera may not get back to me till October 8th. Does anyone have any tips on giving a persuasive request to Sony's customer service to put a rush on my camera repair? They say the repairs are first come, first served and I would have to convince them to give me special treatment. I am not the type of person to try to butt in front of anyone in line but I have been looking forward to this trip for a year now. I can borrow my brother's Kodak camera with 5 mega pixels and
10x zoom but I really want my own camera with all the lenses I have bought for it. Also, has anyone ever heard of a shutter button popping off before? I take good care of my camera and was surprised that it broke this way. I wonder if it just wasn't made for anyone to take a few thousand pictures in a year.

My H5 is about 15 months old and the button popped off today while inside the carrying case. Called for service and was told it would cost $181 not incliding shipping and whatever else they might stick me for. I think it's a manufacturer flaw and this should never happen. I intend to contact whoever, or whomever and try to get them to cover it or never buy another Sony product. I went back and forth deciding on the H5 or a Panasonic(should've went back to Panasonic they've always been good to me). Needless to say I am not happy either. Anybody else had this problem?

I totally agree with you Robert about this being a flaw in the camera. It makes me wonder how many folks are having this kind of problem. As for the outcome of my problem in September, I found out that Best Buy does their own service work and I finally found the correct department to appeal to. I told them about my vacation and I got the camera back one week before we left. The camera works fine but I can tell a little difference in the feel of the shutter. I would not be surpised if the camera broke again. I went ahead and replaced it with an Olympus SP-560UZ for Christmas. I'm still hanging on to the Sony so that I can have a backup if something like this ever happens again.
I guess the lesson here is to always make sure you get a repair contract with the camera and use only the companies you trust the most. I love the way my Sony works but I'm a little nervous about the construction of the camera.
