Hey guys,

I'm stumped. Do you think the following photos are taken in RAW and just edited a little bit, or are they completely changed in Photoshop? I'd love to be able to figure out what is soo good about these photos - just can't pinpoint it. Is it the darkish light, is it the soft feel of the image. Has that soft feel been applied in Photoshop with the blur? No idea, what do you think?

The first one is my favorite - but how would they have taken that? Just with a long shutter to make it look really soft? If you click on the image, it will take you to the photos page.

These photos all seem to use different techniques based on my reading of comments and exif info from the photos.

The first photo is apparently manipulated through Photoshop (the photographer says that he used the blur filter multiple times).

The second is a HDR image (http://infinitisimo.typepad.com/hdr101/2006/10/hdr_tutorial_ph.html) which is created using software to combine multipe exposures of the same scene.

The third photo is apparently a long exposure (20 seconds at f/9 according to the exif data)

The fourth photo was taken with a 1/20 second exposure, not overly long or short. But I don't know how much post production work was done on it.

So, I guess there's no easy answer to your question of how these photos are made since they each use different techniques. Just goes to show that you can create things in many different ways.

And personally, I think that what draws my eye in each of these photos is the dramatic light in them. Not an easy thing to capture :p Probably not the answer you were looking for.

looks like number 3 and 4 have some hdr work as well... and number three could also have emphasized the movement of the sky by adding some motion blur.

Oh wow, thanks guys :)

HDR - I had never heard of that... looks interesting! I think I'll have to play around with it when I get some spare time off work.

I love the second one!

Thanks heaps :)

Yeah, theres a really cool group on Flickr dedicated to HDR shots. You can find some pretty neat ones here, but there are also a few that look overdone.
