I am just beginning to learn to play with photoshp cs2. Here is one of my first attempts. It's an old car that is parked in my neighborhood. Feel free to give me feedback, I need all the help I can get.
Before

After

As best I can remember, this is what I did:
1. cropped photo
2. applied black and white gradient map
3. used channel mixer to give it extreme contrast
4. sharpened
5. applied burned in edge effect (vignetting)
Any thoughts? Barrie

Beautiful result! I like the high contrast that you were able to get. What process did you use to get the vignetting?
This gave me an idea - I wonder what would happen if you took an HDR shot and gave it the same B&W treatment. Would that be defeating the purpose of HDR?

Thanks! I followed the tutorials in Scott Kelby's book, Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers (http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/0321330625/002-1593207-4294411?SubscriptionId=19BAZMZQFZJ6G2QYGCG2). It was very simple:
open photo
create new layer
set foreground color to black (press letter D)
fill new layer with black (Alt-Backspace)
used rectangular marquee to draw inside of photo (about 1/2 inch in)
under Select, chose feather - then entered 170 pixels and OK
hit Backspace and then Control-D
then I lowered the opacity of the black layer a little
What's HDR? Sorry, I'm really new to photography! Barrie

Thanks! The technique sounds simple enough. I'll give it a try.
In a nutshell, High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography uses multiple exposures of an images shot at different exposures, then combined using the best exposed portions of each shot. There are a couple of threads about it on other parts of this forum, and Flickr has several groups about HDR.

This is very nice. I like the crop that took the houses out of the picture and the b&w really helps make the car stand out. This picture might also be a candidate for lomo

Great picture. The second picture sure has the feel of an old photo. Nicely done.
wow, it has agreat effect. but if you would have tried to keep a little of the color I think it would have been better.

Lovely photo, I love how the Black and White has made this image sharper. Real impact.
Keep it up :)
