Another week, another What Would You Do thread :)

This week we have another portrait to work with, this time from Solid_Snake.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v148/Sir_Psycho/Picture0977.jpg

Available large (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v148/Sir_Psycho/Picture097.jpg)

As usual, the rules are simple. Post process the picture however you want to make it something you'd want to show off. Then come back and post the picture with how you did it. And don't forget the most important rule of all, have fun :D

If you want a picture of your own to appear in one of these threads, send me a PM with a link to a medium and large version of the picture.

Now, let's see what you would do :D

GOAL:
Give a sense of 'Waiting for the storm to clear' or 'the sun comes out after a storm.' The subject (boy) already has the perfect mood for this concept (downtrodden), so all that was left for me to do was to make the background look like a storm clearing.

What I did (using Paint Shop Pro 8):
-Cropped off top of the sky
-Duplicated layer
-Desaturated 100% of duplicate layer
-Erased the boy's shirt to bring back the red color
-Erased the right side of the sky to bring out the blue
-Increased saturation of the original layer to brighten the red of the shirt and the blue of the sky
-Unsharp mask of the duplicate layer (radius 75) for local contrast enhancement (did this twice)
-Cloned out the light poles and other miscellaneous poles/sticks
-Dodged the forested hill behind boy's head to allow for some separation of color between the boy's head and the trees
-Dodged a little of the boy himself to brighten him up a bit
-Adjusted color balance a little of the duplicate layer (added cyan to contrast with the red shirt)
-Merged layers
-Added borders

When I saw this photo it just reminded me of someone who had no friends to do anything with. Except for his invisible friend.
My goal was to try and create that friend.
Started by making a copy of the background.
Changed some oot cantrast and saturation
Make a copy of the boy using the magic lasso
Made another copy of the back ground and pasted the copy of the boy in it.
Made a layer and faded the copy of the boy out.
Made another layer and mast to try and bring out some of the green color in the trees.
Made another layer for the frame.
Hope it works for you.

Okay I have a problem with this one...
here is what i did.
I first duplicated the photo.
Made a selection of the sky and cloned out the lights.
Then made a gradient overlay.
Then stylized it with cutout and adjusted a bit.
then made a selection of the lower half with the boy cut out.
I did a dry brush technique.
Then flattened the layers.
My problem is I see a darker shadow around the boy.
At first the selection was creating a line around it in white.
Im not sure if the feather wasnt set right or what I was doing wrong

not many interested this week in the what would you do or all just busy?
Looking forward to more tries. this is a great shot to manipulate.

Just busy. I think this shot has a lot of potential and I like the versions given already but it is all a question of time.

Having said that, I then found I couldn't resist having a go! It would be great if the original was sharper in the foreground to really get the kind of result I had in mind but this one, cropped and colour adjusted, brought out the cinematic feel.

Allright, shamed into finishing this.

I found I really did not care for the mess of pilings on the boy's right, so I cloned those out.

I also thought the pic would be stronger if the hill in the background cut across more of the pic. So on a separate layer I selected it and stretched it across the photo, then masked the boy, pilings etc. where they crossed.

Using layer masks, I did separate levels and curves adjustments for the foreground and sky, lightening the foreground, and trying to get a bit more contrast into the sky.

I then dodged the boy's skin a bit.

Then smart sharpening, masked some in the background.

Oh yeah, I added a bit of a vignette.

Well I wanted it to look kinda sureal like the flowers were the lights but I think I did the light effect backward? It was good for me to learn some things hence the fact I didnt remeber to see what I did.;)

This is one of those exploratory edits, wandering through the tools to see what that one will do, what if I add this, and so on. A list of Photodeluxe steps doesn't help anyone with PhotoShop, so more generic descriptions:

- Boy is selected out of first copy layer, set aside
- A layer is added of everything else darkened. Dock planks are selected and removed from this layer, then filled with light orange to simulate sunlight.
- Darkened layer is given a red-orange mask in right corner.
- Concrete posts are lightened in appropriate areas.
- Light fixtures are removed from dark layer, then first layer is cloned and colored to simulate lights at night.
- Boy is returned to top and erased in areas of shadow to let dark layer show through.
- Lots of blending and finishing touches.

Thanks, Solid_Snake

Very nice jiminy! I really like how you darkened the area in front and really gave us a sense of where the light is coming from.

Very creative Todd and jiminy!! I especially like the sunset hues (pinks, etc.) you both added. I didn't think of that, but it looks great! Nicely done. :)

This is what I have done.

- Picture croped
- enhanced Contrast (perhaps a little bit overdone...)
- Burn Tool on the dock
- Dodge Tool on Boy (a little more on the Head to separate from Background)
- Vignette added
- Shapening

(stupidly taken the small version of the picture, so dont bother with the quality X-)

jtailspin,

Photo was flipped ("reoriented horizontally" according to my program). It just didn't occur to me it would need to be part of the written steps.

i'm not sure if i improved this shot....or ruined it....

crop...tweaked the shadows....new layer with just the boy....tweaked his shadows....flattened....toned down the red of his shirt....the cyan in his jeans and the sky....did a really poor job taking out the light posts with the healing brush.....and finally did an even poorer job of vignetting slightly.....

Here's my attempt at it.

Cropped a little, desaturated, boosted saturation for red, removed lamp-posts, added a yellowish gradient overlay, contrast adjustments, and a lot more I can't remember now :)

Man, Tuesday (NZ time) already... Watch for the next WWYD in a few hours.

As always, I've got to say I'm really impressed by the time and effort that people put into the editing process. It's fantastic to see all the different ways that the shots come out :D
