I have had a Rebel XT for a couple of months and love it. I have read that the kit lens that comes with it is pretty bad. I am thinking of getting a better lens for it but am overwhelmed by all of the choices.

I primarily use the camera for family shots. I rarely feel like I need more zoom. I just want to take better pictures of the kids and our life in general. What is your lens recommendation? Am I going to see a perceivable improvement in my shots from a new lens?

Believe it or not you can pick up the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens for around 80 bucks. It's great for portraits and low lighting situations, and you just cannot beat the price.

About the only negative mentions I've seen in reviews are the perception of the construction quality and the lens hood isn't included. Neither concerned me, and I'm very happy with the lens. :-)

You can play with it for awhile and then upgrade later if you'd like to. I bought the 50mm when I got my Rebel XTi and I love it. It's a great prime.

Thanks for the advice on the EF 50mm f/1.8 II. I just read some reviews over at B&H. Looks pretty good. The only thing I worry about is the issues it seems to have focusing. What is your experience?

the kit lens is not garbage. for the cost, it's excellent. sure it's not as sharp as L lenses nor does it have the lowest f-stop, but for what it is, it's a great starter lens. here are some sample pics with it:

the 50 1.8 is definitely the first lens i'd recommend anyone to get. it's light and plastic-y yes, but for the price, focal length, and f-stop you can't beat the value. many people use it for portraits and it's also great for low light venues such as clubs or concerts. check out amazon.com as i've found they have the best prices for it. back when i bought mine i also bought the battery grip (another highly recommended purchase) and it was like $120 for both. great deal IMO.

Well looks like I am ready to buy the EF 50mm f/1.8 II. B&H has it a couple bucks cheaper than Amazon so I will probably pick it up there. Thanks for all the advice!
