Oh my God! The first 2 shots are amazing.
I loved the eyes of the war veteran, could you try to see how a sepia looks?
In the second one, the framing is so good, the out of focus mamaoth trucks and the cute kids at golden spot with perfect exposure is just outstanding.

Your photographs are an inspiration

I have to agree, that first shot is really nice! I also have to agree, that you can catch nice shots at parades, this is one of my favorites...

Very sharp! Well done, particularly the first 2. I swear the man in the first one is looking directly at me!

No, actually I was using my 70-300mm on my D70.

I think that the first photo, would be AMAZING done in black and white, I would love to see a B+W version, with strong contrast, as well as sharpness.

GREAT shot.

Okay, I feel obligated to comment on the last shot since no one dared! Shorts with dark socks & loafers!!!! Is that the fashion police behind him?:D

Sorry, I just couldn't let this one go. It's not my nature to let something like this just slide by.

No doubt -- he probably went with the loafers to match the more formal tone set by the blazer and tie.

On the topic of socks, how much saturation did you use on the reds in that youthful foto over in Assignments?

I agree with the others, the first two pictures are very special indeed! The picture of the war veteran was awe-inspiring. I wish so much that his family could see that picture...they would be especially proud. Good job of capturing the essence of what a parade is all about.

My daughter is also an amateur photgrapher. Usually the whole family (wife and I and 4 kids) goes to our town July 4th parade but this year only the one daughter (photographer) and I went. We sat on lawn chairs with our DSLR's, she with her Canon, me with my Nikon (we're an integrated family).

Usually the parade is not exciting from a photography standpoint because of the hard light at 11 am. But this year it was overcast...... perfect.

Sometimes it seems like I can't get anything to work photographically. I'll go weeks without getting anything I'm even half proud of. Then when I least expect it things just come together. The parade was like that. The light was great and it just seemed that really interesting people kept coming by.

Anyway, the 1st shot just happened out of the blue. The gentleman was looking to the other side of the street. Then just as the car was approaching us he looked our way and saw our cameras. He immediately put his hand up to salute. Sweet.

The kids in the second shot were fun to watch. They were having a great time early in the parade but when the police and fire vehicles started coming by they stopped and just watched in awe. To answer a question, yes, I did increase the saturation just a little with PS just because it was the 4th and i wanted to emphasize the good old R, W, and B.

As for the half dressed politician. What can I say? Local politics.... you can't make this stuff up.

Nobody commented on the third shot, of the biker couple. They were part of a group of bikers. Great subjects.

It was a good day of shooting.... for once.

Thanks again for all of the encouragement. Makes me want to get out there and get some more!
