Just got a Canon XT, and would like a zoom telephoto lens to go with the one that came with the camera. What should I think about when deciding on which one to get? I'm looking to take photos of birds and other animals, so was thinking of a 200 mm zoom.
Looking forward to all suggestions and tips.

I would strongly suggest the 70-200mm f/4L if you have the extra $500 id go with the 70-200mm F/2.8L though its heavier

You'll want something that goes to at least 300mm, in my humble opinion. I take a lot of bird pictures (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shipwack/sets/72157594463354226/) myself, using a Tamron 70-300mm.

I would go with the 70-200MM f2.8 IS with an extender for the days when you need a little extra reach if you can afford it.
I've got the 70-200 f4 and found that at 200MM it is very weak unless you're using a tripod with a remote shutter. It's hard to get a nice sharp photo out of it.
The 2.8 is terrific. I just upgraded from the f4 and i'm so glad I did!

I have the 75mm - 300mm F4-5.6 Canon lens. Its not as fast as the F2.8 so there is some blur with faster subjects but it does the job.

If you have an idea of how much you want to spend, it would be easier to give you some ideas.
i found the article here http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html very useful for me. hope it helps!
