Edited.

Check below for the first results. I think it was definitely a good start, we are going to take some more tomorrow. It was tough, I just used ceiling light and I think the results were good for the circumstances.

Hi Miles,

You may find this the link in this post useful for your model friend.

Also you could ask her to bring some magazines to get some pose ideas from.

Thanks for the link, I have already printed out about 20 pictures to draw some inspiration from. I will look through that PDF as well.

Moved the thread to the Photographing People area since this has more to do with the techniques used to make your model look good than with composing your photos :)

If you don't have a reflector for the light, you might consider something like this (http://www.diyphotography.net/homestudio/blz/cheap-diy-reflector-stand) to help. Haven't done much with modeling photos, so can't help out much, but definitely come back to this thread and show us your results.

All very good Miles, the mirror shot could have done with being slightly sharper but I like them all. Were you using your 50mm lens for them ? You mentioned you didnt have proper lighting, well if thats just a few normal lamps it asks the question why we need all this expensive studio lighting ! :) If it was her first time modelling she has the moody look off to a tee ! You both did a good job. What did you learn from the experience in the end ? Were all your shots close up or did you take any further away ? Well done :)

Great pics i think that you used the rule of thirds greatly and the black and white scares me!!!That is a good thing...

Thanks for the support Damo.

I agree about the mirror shot, but I think the blur gave it a slightly cool effect as well, her room did not have good lighting at all.

I did shoot all with my new canon 50mm f1.8, just got it a few days ago, I loved it. It was hard to shoot since we were in her basement, and i didn't have much room to move around and work with or many places to put her. They had these studio lights that could turn up and down on their ceiling in two places and I tried to make the best of those so there were about 3 places she could really stand/sit. So we were quite limited in that aspect.

I did get some far away shots with my 18-55mm lens, but with it only being f4, it was hard with the lighting and I was not getting the results I wanted. When we have a bit more room to work, I will try to get some farther away shots aswell.

It was her first time modeling, and the first time I have had a shoot with someone in a long time. She did really good and by the end she was being creative and loosing up in front of the camera. I think she will be pleased with the results.

I learned a lot here actually, I really tried to keep her eyes sharp the best I can, I love portraits like that, I think they are amazing, so I really tried to achieve that. I also learned my old tripod was more a burden then anything, luckily my new one will be here this week (same with only 512mb shooting in RAW, new 2gb card coming as well :)). I was having a hard time trying to think of things to do, being the first time with a model in so long I was kind of stumped on what to do, but she started to help me out then.

We are supposed to get some shots outdoors today, I will post back with results if we do.

Thanks for the compliments!

Yep, nice shots all Miles. Well done. I agree with Damo that the mirror shot could be a little sharper and also the shot with her tipping the glasses. You succeeded in capturing a few different looks and I think the colour of the background works well with her hair colour. And as mentioned, good job working with basic lighting. Onwards and Upwards :D
