Hi. I see a lot of people (if not all) seem to use Adobe's Photoshop software for processing their photos. Is this what everybody recommends or are their other software packages that people use.
I have Corel Paint Shop Pro 9.0 that came with my camera, how does this compare?
Would appreciate your advice and experience.

Cheers

Photoshop is probably the most popular photo-editing program out there. I haven't used Paint Shop Pro for years, so I don't know how it compares. There is also the Gimp, an open-source program.

If you have Paint Shop already, play around with it and see if you like it. It really boils down to what you're comfortable using. I use Photoshop. That's what I grew up on, though, so I'm biased towards it. There are tons of tutorials online for Photoshop, and probably for the others too. Again, it's whatever you're comfortable using.

I use Photoshop Elements or GimpShop (a version of Gimp aimed at working more like photoshop) for my editing depending on what I'm trying to do. Quick edits are usually done in iPhoto (cause it's easy and I'm lazy and I tend to get pretty good results ;))

I've never edited a single one of my photos.

That's not to say I don't know how, I've just never found the need. The way I see it is that if I didn't get the shot right in the first place, then I need to practise more!

at work i use photoshop cs2, at home i use the gimp (www.gimp.org).

Photoshop is the most powerful, and most common. Most people will never use 25% of photoshop's features, but for those who do, it is a powerful tool.

I currently use CS2, and can't wait for CS3. I am Adobe's bitch.

I use CorelPaintShopPro Photo XI and I really like a lot of the features in it. It may be similar to the version you have... You may be able to get some upgrades for a very small fee... if any. I'd check online. My hubby likes Adobe Photo Shop CS2. There is a lot more "wiggle" room with Adobe than with Corel. Some of the filters and features I try with the Corel have undesired results. But, if you have it -- like someone else said -- play around with it. You may find you like it just fine. My hubby is amazed at some of the stuff I can do with the Corel and how quickly it does it compared to how he labors with CS2. But, I do agree, CS2 is more popular and much more effective -- especially with detail work.

Yep -- we should get the shot right from the camera, but it sure is fun to manipulate some photos with software and see what you can come up with... have fun!

I use Aperture for a lot of mine - although I'm not very good at it yet. I really need to sit down for a weekend and learn it properly :-(

Using Photoshop Elements 4, which works really well, but would love to get a full version of Photoshop.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. Will keep having a play with Paint Shop for a bit and maybe try Gimp as well [and will endeavour to take photos that require little touch up :-)]
Much appreciated.
