I had a dream...! Well it was more of a day-dream but a dream nontheless!

We could put together a magazine (pdf & online and most importantly FREE)

The general layout of the magazine:

Darren's articles - around 5 pages of this
Selected Photos from recent assignments - around 12 photos
Featured photos from the pool - around 12 photos
Critique my shot (2 photos from the critique my shot forum whos feedback added value, perspective etc..)

The whole magazine being a total of around 30 pages.

The people who's selected photos are used are invited to write a small description about the photo (adding some context)

All photo's authors must be prominently attributed (with links to flickr)

Now this is the killer part, the photos which are chosen are done so on a voting system, this some code junky would have to put together because I see it as being quite complex

Otherwise, if too complex, the editors of the magazine must go through the selection process (but that must mean they can't include their own photos which is why I would really like a voting type process)

The periodicity would be every 3 months so its not done in a rush and quality is put over speed of delivery

Now, time to bash or embrace this idea, anyone?

As a graphics student i'd love to help out with the layout. I've just put together a photography magazine for my project, i'll put it online when the project is over if anyone wants to see, its nothing special really, but if this idea gets taken further then feel free to let me know.

Why?

I don't want to sound too negative, it being the start of a shiny new year and all, but what would be the benefit of producing something additional to the existing forms of electronic publication?

I like that idea.

@ Wulf: it would add the taste of competetion to people's contributions.. and make it even more fun.. (thats how i feel)

As of now there is no structure to the content in both the forums and blog, one must always be reading them both every single day to be "up to date", not everyone can afford to spend so much time here so its a way to get the cream of the crop, something you "leave with"

Also, its a major motivational boost to have your work published recognized and published somewhere (it can also aid in credentials) and to be honest, every time there is an assignment, who actually bothers looking at every single person's entry??! It's just too many and they keep on submitting weeks later, again the magazine would serve as a "summary" of each assignment

I can see your point. I guess that, as someone who does manage to stay on top of the "freeform" posting (or at least enough to still be learning plenty), the idea of an extra thing to read doesn't appeal. On the other hand, as long as the little(ish) daily doses keep coming then I'm quite happy for other people to spin off a more edited "magazine".

Would like to have a look! We can certainly use people's different talents

Ok, I took all the pictures in this magazine, except one. I put other peoples names in there to make it look like other people had contributed to the magazine, but all my friends were too busy to take any shots for me, so I had to use shots I had taken already. Anyway, here it is.
