A few days ago, my D50 developed a problem where the images are completely underexposed when using the built-in flash. Not a couple clicks underexposed, but severely. This happens in all modes, but if i set the flash mode to Manual (with Full Power) rather than TTL, the exposure seems fine (albeit not adjusted optimally).

I recomposed some pictures I took a few weeks ago in the same conditions, and there is definitely a difference now. It's like the timing is off now, and the flash is either firing too early or too late, because the flash looks to be firing at full power visually.

I found 1 other instance of this:

Make sure you don't have the flash set to slow or rear.

Does it do it in all the settings? Auto vs. macro vs. portrait vs. aperture priority vs. shutter priority?

Do you have the aperture ring locked in the correct postion for the camera to determine distance etc.? Should be locked at f/22.

It happens with both the lenses I have, and the 1.8D is locked at f/22.

And it does happen in full-auto, when I have the flash set to auto, and in aperature priority, when I just have the flash popped-up (just the lightning symbol shows up, not SLOW or REAR).

So, I'll have to exeriment with the remaining modes and flash settings, but it looks like it's heading in for some warranty work at this point.

Thanks for the replies

You might try to reset all settings back to default... I'm pretty sure there's a menu item for that. If that doesn't work, definitely talk to Nikon. From what I hear, they're really good about fixing issues (at least under warranty).
