If anything, I find that I'm discarding more pictures with my new Nikon D40 than I ever did with my old Fujifilm Finepix 1400. However, the difference is that I'm happy to put a lot more of the remaining pictures directly online rather than having to fiddle around with post-processing to tweak them towards the image I want.

It's still largely down to my eye and my judgement though.
