From what I understand, turning VIVID on enables Canon's proprietary software to analyze the image and make certain colors even more vibrant.
Meaning, muted colors will stay muted, like skin tones. But if the color being fed to thru happens to fall at the edge of the color spectrums (meaning they are very bright, saturated colors), VIVID will tell the printer to print the colors even more vibrant than what the image shows.
Here's the logic behind this. Cameras typically shoot in the sRGB color space. This color space doesn't nearly cover the whole spectrum of available colors. Meaning, you might take a picture of a bright neon green with your camera, but because the sRGB color space doesn't cover that wide of a spectrum to fully encapture that bright neon green, it actually looks a little dull in the picture, and therefore will print out dull.
VIVID technology will spot that green and ask itself if that green was possibly a lot more "vivid" in real life. If it thinks so, then it'll tell the printer to actually print out something more vivid than what the picture captured.
I hope that made sense. I also hope that I am correct in my thinking. :)
