i ordered the D40 last week, but then some told me that D40 picture quality is terrible, is that true? i also want to buy the small SB-400 speedlight, is it any good? how is the D40 compared with the D40x? my guess is D40 will have less noise than D40x because it has fewer pixel, but i dont know:confused: please tell me. i still can cancel my delivery.

I was a bit upset when I heard that Nikon had released the D40x, because I got my D40 at Christmas.

However, on reflection, I've decided that I'm really not too bothered. I definitely don't need more megapixels - I shoot at the medium size as it is and even then my present system struggles to have a couple of images at that sized open for editing at once. Image quality is great and I don't think the D40x would better that for my purposes.

Therefore, I'm happy to have a D40 - if that hadn't been an option, I probably would have ended up with a different camera entirely. Unless money is no problem, I would stick with the D40 you have on order and put the difference in cost towards the flash unit you are after.

Don't cancel your order. The d40 is a great camera, and the D40x doesn't offer much more for the price difference. You don't really need the extra megapixels. Personally, I would stick with the D40, use the money that you save from not buying the d40x, and pick up the 55-200 lens.

Those colours have come out pretty well, Lori. What mode did you use on the camera? Portrait or something else?

I agree that the the benefits don't warrant the higher price. I recently bought a d40 and was in the same situation but chose the d40 because the $200 wasn't worth needless megapixels and .5 shots more a second.

Those ken rockwell reviews are ok, but i'd take them with a grain of salt because he seems to be quite bias on what he recommends and who he buys from.

I am a beginner but i have learnt that pixels dont make a good photo. I still use my point and shoot olympus 3.2 and love the quality of colour and general apperance of the photos. I just got my nikon d40 so have to learn how to use the settings. I took the photo of the baby on auto with the nikon.

I think you'll love owning a D40 and don't worry about the D40X. Having 10mp can be good for some things like cropping (and if you're making huge prints) but aside from that it has quite a fair few downfalls. Noise for one, but handling 10mp files can be a bit of a pain as write speeds and editing becomes slower, yadda yadda... so hold on to that D40.

SB-400 I have and while I think it makes a great base flash (certainly good to have over the built-in pop-up) I feel now that it might have been best to go one step up to the SB-600 back then rather than now. The SB-400 served me damn well when I needed it in Oslo but now I find I'm looking to upgrade to the SB-600, possibly 800.

In summation, I can't fault the SB-400 as an affordable upgrade for the built-in flash (which produces harsh, ugly light in most cases) but I find I'm wanting something with more capabilities.

You might find yourself craving the talents of an SB-600 or SB-800 in the near future so my advice would be to spend that little bit extra on the SB-600 from the get-go which is more than capable.

The d40 takes great pics!! You can make large prints with it, but probably I'll never do more than a few 8x10s, so why spent 200 bucks to fill up your memory cards with something you'll never use. I took the extra money I saved over the d40x and bought the 55-200 vr lens!!!

The D40 is great! I've had mine for 2 months and 7,000 shots (no error). Would not get the 40x, you will be happy with the 40. Check out some of my shots at flickr and while there check out some of the shots at the D40 groups. Also check here for shots taking by other members with their D40.
