af assist and portraits

I like taking portrait shots indoors, without flash. However, I've been using a friend's canon powershot a710IS, and the AF Assist lamp seems to always come on and practically blind the subject - at the very least it ruins my attempts to get candid, unposed shots. any advice for preventing this? I can hear you say "turn on all the lights"...

I don't know about that particular model, but you can disable that focus assist beam from firing somewhere in the options menus. Dig around the menus, I've got to think there's an option to turn that off in there.

...or check the manual. But yes, I think there's usually an option to turn off the AF assist lamp.
