Now that Canon USA has announced the Spring Rebates that do not include bodies, does anyone know of any good prices for the XTi?
I am interested in the kit, and I have done some pretty good research on the web.
Anywhere else I should consider?

Also deciding between the 18-55 kit and the 17-85 kit
Thanks!

I have the 18-55 kit and its a decent lens for the money, but I eventually picked up the Tamron 28-75, mostly because I wanted the 2.8. I haven't tried the 17-85, but if it has IS that might make a difference to me. Here are some user reviews: http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=222&sort=7&cat=27&page=3 (Hope this is the one you mean). As you can see, some love it, others not so much. It might be worthwhile to buy the body alone and a different lens. Depends what you want to spend.

To cut costs and help my learning curve I've thought also about the XTi Body w/ 50mm prime.
Anybodys thoughts on this alternative???

There are quite a few people that go this route. The 50 is a great lens for anybody and even if you get a kit lens, spending another $70 for the 50 is a good deal. Nicole uses a 50 on her Nikon a lot and gets wonderful shots.
This thread has a section on the 50: http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1400.
But actually the 18-55 kit lens only adds about $100 to the price of the camera which is a bargain when it comes to lens prices.

Yeah....not too sure about what I am going to do...or even when.
Hopefully soon, with great glass! :-)

erm.. i have tried both kit lenses (18-55, 17-85) on xti. the 18-55 feels kinda right for the xti, while the 17-85 may feel overly front-heavy due to its weight.
IMHO, 18-55 is a great starter lens for the price for everyday shooting.
17-85mm offers only 30mm more, so if u r looking for long range, u may be better off saving the difference and get a 70-200 or 70-300.
just my 2 cents' worth. =)

Just starting off with the 50mm prime seems like it would be pretty restrictive. The 18-55 is a decent starter lens, and it's the one I started with on my first DSLR system a year and a half ago. And if you can squeeze out just a little more from your budget (or wait a few weeks and replenish it) you can get that and the f/1.8 50mm prime, which runs around $75. The 1.8 isn't the best in terms of build or image quality, but it's decent and will add a fast lens to your system.
And then you want to start saving for the Canon 50mm f1.4, which is currently my favorite lens and which I heartily recommend all new Canon users put somewhere early in their upgrade path. :)

Exactly what I did when my nifty broke last summer:( . It's a good idea to start with the 50 1.8 to see if you like using that focal length.
