View Full Version : The Obligatory "Look Ma! I'm on a plane!" vacation shot

I have a minor obsession with taking pictures out of plane windows, probably as a result of too many tedious transatlantic flights and a childlike fascination with the seeming improbability of being 32,000 feet up in the air in a big metal box. I've been grounded for some time now and I'm starting to miss the plane window perspective, so I'd like to see some of your aerial shots.

Amusingly it looks like you're living in my old home town (although I've been living in the States for four months now) so perhaps it's a Reading thing.

Leafing through your flickr pictures is making me vaguely homesick - glad to see the Peruvian panpipe blokes are still about!

I don't have any worthy of posting here, but with the advent of Google Earth, I've had fun trying to take a photo out the window of a plane, then match it up with the location in Google Earth.

In the interest of full disclosure, my success rate hasn't been very high.

Wow. That's a great one Rachel. What mountain range is that?

Andy - looks like you're on the very edge of space in that 3rd one. Insane.

These are great, guys. Thanks :)

Wow. That's a great one Rachel. What mountain range is that?

I really couldn't tell you. It was on the way back from Washington, DC, and I'd been up since 3am. I was barely awake enough to remember how to set the camera (as a long string of poorly-exposed out-the-window shots just before this one could attest), much less pay attention to the pilot... I only know it wasn't anywhere near enough to familiar mountains (i.e., the Cascades and Olympics, or Mt. Rainier) for my taste. ;)

I /think/ it was probably somewhere in the Rockies, given that we flew over mountains for something like half an hour straight. I got many different mountain shots, but that was by far my favorite.

My best out the window shot was on a trans atlantic flight in either 86 or 87...I will have to see if I can find it and scan it in. The photo was of an American F-14 off of the right wing of the airliner, about 2.5-3 hours out of O'Hare enroute to London Gatwick.

Obligitory is right! I've been over the top of the world twice on Chicago-to-Beijing routes. Although desolate, I tried both trips to get usable "Hey, I'm flying north of the Artic Circle" shots. So far, no real winners. I did get a couple of interesting captures of far northern China and NE Russia. I'll have to dig around to find them.

I took this shot on a flight from Copenhagen to Oslo... it was so overcast that it was pretty much impossible to get any terrain shots, but it made for some great cloud pictures. I'm hoping that the weather will clear for at least one of my flights in the next couple days. :)

I think the idea is a wonderful one, KatherineEmma, and I have to admit I have to do it too -- I can't pass up the opportunity to point my lens out a dirty, or condensation-filled, window at altitude!

I have another confession - I have a collection of pretty bad "This is the first piece of land I saw when we flew into X" (flll in the blank - Japan, Ireland, Abaco...)

Here, if I post correctly (this is my very first post and very first upload) are two I liked.

The prop's spinner reflecting the plane on the way to Abaco, Bahamas.

And the Rocky Mountains, as we took off out of Vancouver last December, the pilot did NOT climb. I was a bit curious, a little worried (I am a private pilot, but haven't flown in a few decades.).

It turned out that the weather was so phenomenally gorgeous and clear that he had gotten permission to fly us low and just over the 49th parallel, the border of the US and Canada. And we stayed that low for almost an hour. It was a gift!

So, if I do this right, let's see if I can get these uploaded!
(Okay, looks like I did - so why are they so teeny?)

Best,
Patty

I am thinking I was lucky with mine, it was a low alt flight, just up the coast from Sydney to Coffs harbour and back... and it had just rained as we boarded so maybe they got a bit of a wash. Usually I always try sit near the window and always have a camera with me...
