View Full Version : Getting Lens Information from EXIF data

Oftentimes, I think it would be nice to tag my pictures with what lens I took the shots with. I believe that with full frame cameras like the 5D, that information is stored in the EXIF data, but with crop factor cameras like the 20D I don't know if that same data is available (of course I could be wrong - but I cannot find the lens information aside from the focal length, which doesn't always tell you which lens was used).
Is there a way to get this data out with the shots taking from a 20D?
Ever try Exif Reader?

that's what it looks like on my 20D. It tells just about everything.

Edit: I just noticed after really looking at it. It only says the focal length.
But I also notice "Focal Length Of Lens"

the focal length is included in the exif on the 20d. you can see this information in the zoombrowser software that's included with the camera, or even in photoshop.
it won't tell you that you shot the photo with the 18-55mm lens, it'll only tell you what focal length. so if you shot one at 50mm and you have a 18-55mm and a 70-200mm lens, you took it with your 18-55mm.
i don't believe that any camera will tell you exactly what lens you shot with.
Okay, I switched lens and tried it again. the 20D does say which lens you used in Exif reader.

thanks for the help Bail, you're right about the information being there - it was more a shortcoming of the software that I was using. I was able to view the lens information using canon's eos viewer software (go figure huh?). i sent an email to ask for aperture (the software I use) to display the lens information - you would think that it would be one of the pieces of exif data that they should display.
thanks again.
Heh, I should put that software in someday.
Maybe I need a firmware upgrade that i'm un-aware of.
