It's a very interesting link, although I preferred more natural poses.
For those on slower connections, the file is about 4MB... so be careful out there ;)

Well, I found these pages that talk about posing family photos (large and small groups). They aren't as comprehensive or illustrative as the pdf file above, but they do provide some helpful information:
Family portrait poses (http://www.best-family-photography-tips.com/family-portrait-poses.html)
Family photography for large groups (http://www.best-family-photography-tips.com/family-photography.html)
Family portrait ideas (http://www.best-family-photography-tips.com/family-portrait-ideas.html)And then there's always the tips on the blog (http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/how-to-take-great-group-photos/) for group photos which offers a few ideas on how to put people.

I find that when you are taking portrait shots. it's nice to experiment with different eye direction. With children, it's a given. Their always looking off somewhere else. I use a string of sleigh bells to get their attention if I actually want them looking at the camera when I'm taking family shots.

Saralonde,
Thank you so much for this info. I first of all appreciated the pose ideas very much but then went on to the website itself to check it out. What these people are doing with missions moved me more than I can describe. Just wanted to let you know that something you did in one aspect was very much appreciated yet really turned into something very meaningful for me in another.

This is coming from someone who likes to be BEHIND the camera and not in front of it...but...
All poses make me pretty uncomfortable
Seriously though, kinda like your parents knowing best, sometimes the photographer knows which pose is best to capture their subject. Of course, if the subject is SO uncomfortable that it ruins the picture, then your point is quite well taken! In the end, what matters is the resulting image; in fact, it might be better if the person has that memory of "Wow, that picture looks great! I can't believe that uncomfortable position actually LOOKS good." LOL

Hi there, all--
I went to the site with the pages on posing (http://www.best-family-photography-tips.com/photography-pose.html) and noticed they also provide some books on posing (http://www.best-family-photography-tips.com/learn-photography.html) and other interesting stuff. They even have one on the primary nemesis of photographers: Avoiding or Eliminating BLINKING (http://www.best-family-photography-tips.com/EliminateBlinking)!
I actually got the blinking one because I didn't believe it was possible, but It Actually Worked! Blew me away.
If anyone finds any other books, sites, blogs, etc on posing, please let us know.

For posing, your best guide is actually good professional photographer's galleries. Most of my family and child poses come from where the family ends up naturally, but when i do stage a shot I borrow what I have learned from my fellow photogs on my many forums or by browsing their portfolios. I spent $3 at the local art store and bought a small sketchbook that I keep in my camera bag, if I see something that makes me think of a great pose, I sketch it quickly (and crudely). I got to the bookstore and pick up lots of different photography books and flip through them, if I see one with poses I like, I sketch real quick. I go to the park with my kids for a picnic and watch other families and get ideas from just watching them play and interact.
In no time I came up with enough poses to keep what shots I do stage always looking fresh. The key is to use what is readily available to you out there and collect it. Yes this is a lot more work than just buying a book with a bunch of premade poses in it, but it will help you pick and choose what fits your style. Being a photographer is being an artist, you need to pick and choose what works for you, not what someone else says works for you.
What that pdf is best for is not necessarily choosing this pose or that pose, but it shows you the different ways contorting the body effects the different parts of the body.

Thank you for the link :D I am not sure if any of you are familiar with the 3d program poser. This is a really good program to have. You can pose your 3d model (s) and apply lighting to see the best effect. I am more proficient in poser than my camera  I believe if you were to search it in google, you'd come out with some good results for it. ;)

THANK YOU SARALONDE for that handy PDF link! My crazy spouse kind of jumped the gun yesterday and asked a co-worker if she'd like to do some posing for me so I could get in some much-needed practice at portraiture.... and I'm really nervous about looking like a complete bumbling idjit. LOL. Now I can just print the pages and point and say "Can you stand the way that one's standing?".
I was very glad to see a good selection of mens' poses and couples' poses too. My spouse (like most dudes) has a serious phobia of posing, but I think showing him a few of these might help him not feel quite so dorky when I need him to model (since Tom Selleck repeatedly turns down my offers).
Is there any tool like that available for posing mothers or fathers with infants?
Oh, and @t EnticingArt, I have a copy of Poser around here someplace but have kept putting off installing it. My original intent was to use it as a sort of electronic version of the artist's Adam/Eve for drawing...but now that I see how you're using it, I think I will install it today.
