Having just got my D80 two days ago, I have a lot to learn. One thing I'm really confused by is the little clip that comes with the camera to use when you use the timer or remote. It says its to keep light from entering the camera. How are you supposed to set up a shot when you can see anything?

I take a lot of night shots, and use the timer to keep away the shakes, it will be a pain to have to line up my shot then put the cover on for every shot.

Am I missing something here?

You know, maybe someone has a better answer than me, but I've taken long exposure night shots, I've used the timer, I often use the remote, and I've *never once* used that little thingy to cover the viewfinder. In all honesty I'm not actually sure I even know where it is anymore. I don't think it's screwed up any of my pictures having not used it though :p So if it's a pain, just don't use it ;)

never used it with my D50.. and did i even get one with my D80???...lol forget about it .. put it back in the box that your camera came in.. only pull it out if you think your images are being ruined by light getting in via extra long exposures :)

I know this is the Nikon section, but I thought I'd just share that this clip in question is actually built into the neck strap on Canons (well, at least on my 10D it's that way).

Theoretically, it's supposed to reduce/eliminate any stray light that could enter in thru the viewfinder and sneak its way down onto the image sensor, thus affecting your exposure.

Mine has a clip for the strap.

I think I'll just toss it in my bag somewhere, I figure if I have a problem with light getting in I could lay a lens cloth over the view finder.

Thanks
