It's another week of WWYD :)

A big thanks to everyone who worked on last week's picture. Restoring old pictures is a big challenge, and I think we all learned a little about ways to fix up those family treasures.

This week's picture is a winter scene from photog418:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25167231@N06/2399560861/" title="wintry river (by photog418)"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2409/2399560861_7eab9d4f22.jpg" title="wintry river (by photog418)" alt="wintry river (by photog418)" width="500" height="375" /></a>

Available larger (http://www.flickr.com/photos/25167231@N06/2399560861/sizes/o/)

The rules are simple. Edit the picture, come back, post the result and your steps. If you want your picture to be the subject of one of these threads, just send me a PM with a medium and large version of your picture and I'll use it in the order I've gotten it. The queue is fairly short at the moment, so if you're interested in having your picture used, now is the time :)

Now, let's see what you would do!

Duplicated image/ adjusted color balance to give it a purple tint / burned the sky and around the edges for a slight vingette look / done. oh and cloned out the one little piece of wood in the front

I was bothered by the sky being blown out over the mountains, so wound up making it a night shot. Here's what I did:

removed log and stone in front
Converted to b&w
cropped shot so river took 2/3 of area
colorized a dark purple
added a "moon" and dark vignette
(of course it took me 2,570 steps to do it in real life (correcting and recorrecting myself), but that's netting it out!

I couldn't figure out how to make the snow in the foreground whiter without making trees, etc. lighter. Input appreciated!

well, when i first saw this photo two things popped up in my mind. first, the trees are all too dark. and second...if it's going to be a winter photo, then lets make the river icy. of course, i don't really know how to do something like that, but i thought i'd give it a try.

anyways, as for the steps.

to make the trees lighter i simply went to Shadow/Highlights and played around with it till you can see the individual trees on the left hand side a bit better.

the rest went as follows:

adjusted hue/saturation to bring out the green
made a selection of the river
copied to new layer
painted this selection white and changed the blending mode
added layer mask to this selection and used the radial gradiant tool in an attempt to make water around wood look less icy
made another layer with current selection
painted white again and used filter>add noise (tick the monochromatic selection)
used motion blur on the added noise to make the ice more "realistic" looking
also made a selection of the sky the same way it was shown in POP Photo (april 08 issue)
played with hue/saturation to change the color a bit
also changed my foreground and background colors picked from sky, then used a linear gradiant over the "īce" to try to tie in the sky with the ground

oh, just noticed i forgot to mention that at some point i used the liquify tool a bit on the reflection on the "ice"

hahah...that was a lot of steps and of course it's not very good, but it was fun playing with it. sorry i don't have more exact instuctions as i was doing a lot of ctl+alt+z"-ing while trying to induce the right effect.

Out of curiosity (since I don't know if my local library gets POP Photo), could you explain about this part? I'm always looking for good info about making selections. :)

Love the icy river BTW :)

sure, i'll start a new topic in an appropriate forum so others that may not check out this particular forum can also see it. i'll update this post with the link to the new topic once i've finished. i'll try to explain it without plagerizing although that is certainly a fuzzy area overall. i don't want to get anyone (including myself) into any trouble. :)

is mine too extreme???

windrider86
04-17-2008, 03:08 PM
no its not to extreme. thats the whole point of the game is to see how others might tweak, re-create, fix, or enhance a photo. It's a great opportunity to learn new tricks. So wheny ou play please try and post what steps you took to acheive your creation so others can learn from it

04-17-2008, 03:14 PM
so i need to post how i create it , right?
oke oke

1. open the image (of course ) with CS3
2. play the tone color with curves
3. add some grain/noise to make it more vintage
4. use eraser tool and scatter the edges
5. use drop shadow
6. adding [kiu] watermark

that's all folks :D

I didn't know what else to do with this, so I kept it simple and just added some clouds and a fancy border. :)

Using available color from the photograph, this is a saturated, contrasted, masked edit:
- Sky is first selected and saturated until blue and pink-orange appear. (Separate layer)
- Trees are selected, hue is changed to greens and lightened. (Separate layer)
- Water is selected, contrasted and lightened. Log is removed. (Separate layer)
- Vignette is added to focus attention towards mountain.
- Gradient is added to darken lower righthand corner, to lower distraction.
- Sky is copied, flipped top-for-bottom, stretched to fit water area, noise added.

Great change, Jiminy. I learned a lot! Am curious why you added noise.

Here's my attempt.

<a href="http://s267.photobucket.com/albums/ii306/kiffiej/DPS/?action=view&current=WWYD_47.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii306/kiffiej/DPS/WWYD_47.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I desaturated the layer, then added a strong sepia photo filter (85%), and finished it off by adding a darkening curves adjustment layer (a funny looking J-shape).

dlaf, Thanks

After adding the flipped stretched sky, the water surface looked too smooth. The noise (and Despeckle) gave back a little "roughness" to the surface.

in Photoshop Elements
What I did was
Duplicated the background
Selected the sky with the magic wand
Feathered to 150%
Added the sky
Added different layers of Hue/Saturation and Levels
And came up with this.

Haven't done one of these for a while. Here is my attempt:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/shazzt/2425897279/" title="What Would you do 47 by shazzt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2122/2425897279_6846c381a0.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="What Would you do 47" /></a>

Opened the photo in Camera Raw. Warmed it up a bit using Colour Temp(+13) and brightened it up by increasing the exposure(+1.45). Used Recovery(32) to clamp down the highlights. Added a little fill light(9) and boosted the blacks slightly (8). Also added some clarity(38) and vibrance (20).
Took it into Photoshop. Did a levels colour correction (which took away much of the warmth I added in ACR LOL). Changed to LAB mode. In a curves adjustment layer, steepened the a and b curves to boost the colour a bit and lightened in the L channel to bring out some of the shadow detail. Changed back to RGB. Used the sponge tool to get rid of some colour stuff in the highlight edges (not very exact). Applied a medium contrast curves adjustment layer. Added a new layer (soft light mode) and drew a black to transparent gradient from the top to about halfway to darken the sky up a bit more. Finally added a slight vignette but duplicating the photo, change to Multiply blend mode, making a highly feathered selection just in from the edges of the photo and deleting the middle. Phew....hope you like it.

My take:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2342/2429837532_3912388a96.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brickhead/2429837532/)

You want the steps? This could take a while!!!

Cropped & Straightened, converted to B&W using split toning, cloned out low branches in right foreground, burned in mountains and cloned to make more visible.

I used a Photoshop action that is my "secret weapon" that I found on the 'net a long time ago (I googled and can't find the source right now). I think they called it "paint with light", but it's just a dodge/burn effect that adds contrast. It's easy to use because you paint on the layer mask to add the effect.

All this in one hour... if you like it, that must mean I'm getting the hang of Photoshop :-)

I increased the contrast and lessen the brightness.... increased green on color balance...

then voila... DI-SAS-TER!

I wanted to give it an old, "found at the bottom of a box" feel, so I:
- Adjusted the curves to get an interesting contrast;
- As I increased the contrast the mountains got completely blown, so I selected them I adjusted the exposure on that patch to get them back to the photo;
- Cropped the picture to remove some of the stuff from the bottom and right that I found distracting;
- Converted to B&W;
- Adjusted the hue to make it more brown, like some old photos;
- Added some graininess and then blurred a bit;
- Added a white border to suggest a printed photo

What I did (in Paint Shop Pro Photo XI):
-Desaturated 100%
-Unsharp mask (radius 75, strength 25)
-Added peeling paint texture layer, 38% overlay
-Added garage floor texture layer, 57% hard light
-Added old wallpaper texture layer, 100% overlay
-Merged all layers
