Just seeking out my fellow Nikon d50 shooters.

I've often felt like people view the d50 as a sub-par camera because of it's entry level price but I've owned mine for nearly a year and it has rocked my world and produced some wonderful images from me.

How long have you owned the d50?
What lenses/accessories do you use?

Post your favorite shot taken with the d50.

Hi, I'm Nicole and I'm a d50 user ;)

I love my d50 too, so I feel no shame over owning one.

I've had my d50 for nearly a year (got it in Jan 2006). My lenses are listed in my sig, and the only other accessories I have are some filters (UV / Polarizing), the remote, and a tripod (nothing flash though). I really love the remote for bulb exposures. I'm hoping to get a flash or maybe a new lens in 2007.

My fav shot I've taken with the d50 has got to be... boy, this is hard to decide, isn't it? But I really love this one, even if it isn't technically perfect:

I've owned my D50 since March or April... one of our favorite wedding presents. :)

I've got a close-up filter set, a macro extension lens, an old flash, and their two basic lenses, 18-55mm and 55-200mm. We're hoping to get some nicer lenses and a new flash when we've got the cash. A lot of my camera gear I've stolen from my old film SLR (Nikon compatibility rocks so hard).

and a favorite picture? ha! I don't know about that. I like this one a lot, though:

Beautiful shots everyone! Glad to hear you all like your D50. I would like to upgrade from my Canon S3 and I'm trying to choose between the Rebel and the D40/D50. My only concern about the D40 is the fact that it doesn't have the focus motor built-in, which means you have to buy AF-S lenses for it. Which narrows the selection of lenses, and I think they are more expensive than normal lenses (?) which don't have the focus motor built-in.

for that reason only i would NOT get the D40... D50 or d70s are cheap enough with all the bells and whistles i need

WOW... that photo is amazing!... What lens did you use to capture it. I can bet that was a hard catch with that clarity and sharpness.

thanks :)
i was soooo very pleased with this shot it was taken about a week after i got my camera... with a sigma 70-300 APO @195mm, F5, 1/1000

the hardness of it was only sitting for a few weeks so the little hummer got used to me.. b4for i got the d50 i was using a Minolta Dimage z5 with also impressive shots of this little girl.. but now where near this quality :)

I totally agree with this, if you've got a choice between the d40 and d50, go with the d50, there's much more you can do with it, if only because you can use more lenses :)

I own a D50 for a few months now and I like it.
I have a feeling that most people think D40 cannot use lenses other than AF-S.
This is not true. Non AF-S lens can still be used but you will have to use the manual focus.

After a lot of research I finally decided on the D50 last month. I'm new to this DSLR thing and I've learned a lot over the last month. But I'm very happy with my camera and if I ever become a very famous photographer (ha ha):) , then I'll upgrade.

I'm also new to this sight. How do I post a picture? Can someone direct me ?

mikem:

there are instructions on this thread (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5) for posting pics. for this to work, you need your pictures online somewhere. Flickr is a great place to start, if you don't already have something like that set up.

and if that doesn't work (sorry, forgot about this part), copy the link of the pic's location (http:// ... .jpg) and paste it where you want the pic to be. then click the icon with the mountain or put and on either side of it. To link that somewhere, select it, click the link icon (world with the chain), and paste the link in the dialog box that pops up.

I always preview my post before I post it, because different threads sometimes have different rules.

hope that was helpful...

I'm also new to this sight. How do I post a picture? Can someone direct me ?

One thing about posting pictures to the threads here, double check to see if html is on in the area of the forum or not by looking at the posting rules (this only seems to apply in the Equipment forums, all other forums allow html).

For Example:

http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/images/element/buttons_blue/collapse_thead.gif (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=2115#top) Posting Rules You may post new threads
You may post replies
You may post attachments
You may edit your posts
vB code (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode) is On
Smilies (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/misc.php?do=showsmilies) are On
[IMG] (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode#imgcode) code is On
HTML code is Off

If the HTML code is off, you need to use [url="enter website address here"][IMG]location of picture[ /IMG][ /URL] to make your pictures show up (just remove the spaces that are in the code).
The easy way to do this is to click the button that looks like mountains on a yellow sky on the bar above where you're typing your post. Let me know if you need that explained better :)

I don't really agree with the sentiment about their being a sort of snobbery towards the D50. All the pros I know use it or an even older model of Nikon and they all say that its in the glass and in the photographers eye, not in the newest and latest camera.

How long have you owned the d50? Since September of this year

What lenses/accessories do you use? Oh lord! LOL Are you ready for the list?

Lenses:
Quantaray 28-90mm (has macro ability) - currently my fav
Nikkor 70-300mm
Phoenix 100mm f/3.5 Macro
Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG (has macro ability) - just ordered it yesterday

Filters:
UV
Infrared
Close-up filter set

Other:
2x teleconverter

Future purchases:

Remote control shutter release
Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 lens
Sigma 15mm f/2.8 Fish-eye lens (just for fun!)

I can't pick one favorite photo! So here is a link to the ones that are my current favs... sorry.. I just love them all.

LINK (http://www.maroongraphics.com/blog/index.php?x=browse&category=13)

Its not my all-time fav but its one of them and since its also one of the first shots I ever took with my D50 and its won me a couple of awards... here ya go.. my sentimental fav.

I too have had my D50 since a year ago January. I have a 15 year old son who plays football and wrestles. A friend of mine got me into it and I went full force! I have taken about 8000 pictures. Attached is one of my favorite pictures which I cropped. Hopefully it is attached since this is my first time on this board. I have the two standard lenses that came with the kit and just purchased a Tamron 28-300 which I use the majority of time. I still have two I want but they will have to wait. :)

Picked up my D50 last week. I opted for the 18-135mm Nikkor lens because I wanted some range. I am loving it so far. Now I just need to learn how to shoot outside of Auto mode. =P

I recently got my D50 as an anniversary present ...my daughter has one and I fell in love with hers. I have had the best time playing with it and I'm dying to learn all the ins and outs. I really want to know how to get the best shots with it so, I'm studying and really trying all the techniques I've been reading here on DPS.

I have a tripod, the Nikon Nikkor 28-80mm and a Quantaray 70-200mm with built in macro. I really would like to get more lenses and some filters. So, any suggestions on "must haves" would be great! We are moving to the U.K. next month and I really want to be able to take some amazing snaps of our time in Europe.

This is actually the photo that persuaded me to purchase the D50 -my eldest daughter took this one of my youngest daughter- I want to be able to take pics like this!! I saw this and I knew I had to have it. :)

I got my D50 for Christmas and need to learn how to take pictures! To me, your photographs are ALL stunning -- I can only hope that one day I will do as well.

Now to figure out how to use Flickr so that I can upload a couple of photos.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the pros and cons of various photo editing software for PC? Should something like that be my next purchase, or should I get more hardware?

Gee. Can you tell that I am new to this? I had a little point-and-shoot Pentax Optio -- great for what it was, but I wanted more control. I love the D50 but want to learn how to get the most out of it.

Any suggestions on how to get started? Thanks!

Hi Elle :)

Once you get a Flickr account, check out the FAQs (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/faq.php?faq=img#faq_flckr) for how to post images to threads here using your images from Flickr.

As far as photo editing software for the PC, you'll get lots of opinions on that. One place to start might be this thread on Other Editing Software (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=494). You've got options that range from free to upwards of $500. It depends a lot on what you want to do also. If you want to just do basic edits like improving the contrast or lightening a photo, you might want to try Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/download/). If you want the ability to actually manipulate your photos, you might want to try The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/) or GimpShop (http://www.gimpshop.net/). If you want something in between, you could always use Photoshop Elements (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/). The first two are free, the last is not.

Good luck with your new camera, and I look forward to seeing what you post. :)

out of curiosity, how much did you pay? I just got mine as well and tried using the fact that it was discontinued as a selling point for a discount, but they wouldnt budge, i ended up paying $679 (tax free)...

Hi, I'm new here.

I use a Nikon D50. I love it. I'm extremely new to the hobby and need to learn a lot. most of my photo's are of action photo's at work or sight seeing vacations. Hopefully with time, I can make some money off this little hobby/investment.

Just got my D50 last week. using the kit lens now. I m realy amazed by how sharp the pics are. I once heard that kit lens can nvr be good. I guess those are just myth. you never knew till you tried it yourself. :)
Hopefully in the future , I will be able to produce & capture those moments in my life with this beautiful piece of machine.

Hi I just registered yesterday after following the blog before that.

My Nikon d50 will have its anniversary on the 28th, but there have been periods and even a month without a photo taken.

Now I decided to study photography more and the Nikon d50's user friendliness helps a lot.

I have these accessories and lenses in my camera bag

18-55 f/3.5-5 kit lens
Tamron 55-200 f/4-5.6
Nikon 50 mm, f/1.4 my (my favorite)
lensbaby 2.0
Nikon speedlight SB-600
Cokin circular polarization 52 mm
Hoya UV filter
and the rest of my stuff on my Kaboodle list
http://www.kaboodle.com/angelbq/4b-in-my-camera-bag.html

This is my fave picture so far

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/218/502516767_dae5a9bcab_o.jpg

It's just that it turned out grainy (in the original picture, the subject was very darka nd it might have gotten grainy because of my post processing), but I love the moment and action captured. Unfortunately it went inside the goal, but it could have been a great save.

Another D50 user here, I've had it since last February and I love it.

Full list of kit:
D50 & D200
Nikkor 24-85 f/3.5-4.5G, 18-70 f/something, 50 f/1.8D, 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G VR (LOOOOOVE VR)
Lightroom and CS2

I have my eye on the Tokina 12-24 f/4, but I'm loathe to spend money right now.

Hi,

About the "bulb", you find it using the manual mode (I don't recall on the other settings, there are modes I don't use much or nothing at all). It will show up when you have the exposure to it's extreme, under low light conditions.

So, trying to put it in another way, in low light conditions, while manipulating f/ and aperture, you can get it and it is easier to achieve with low iso. Please excuse me if this is not clear.

Regarding the other questions, I have my D50 for more than a year now, and all photos posted on my flickr page, since June-2006 are with my D50. I don't have a specific favorite picture, but this is one of my favorites:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/151/387551207_e942e1fbf9.jpg

I just have the body and the nikkor 18-55mm lens, plus a cheap tripod. If finances go well, then I'll get a 55-200mm nikkor lens, and perhaps a remote control. My only problem with the D50 is caused by dust, due to where I live, so regular cleaning is required. In terms of costs, the body and lens were around $770, but I got an extra battery, an extra digital card, and two year protection plan for the body and the lens, so the cost was higher. But I am happy with my camera, I was even invited once to an exposition, so imagine!!!! (I am still an amateur photographer)

Take care all,

Arturo

I've had my D50 for less than a year. I bought the body and used my crappy Promaster lens until I decided to ditch it and get the 18-55 "Kit" lens. I alsu use a Nikkor 80-300 zoom lens for close-ups. I like it so far, but I want more eventually.

Here's one of my favorite shots. I'm going to the Smoky Mountains this weekend so hopefully I'll have another batch of shots.

Have had my D50 for about a year now though I have not used it nearly as much as I would have liked. I also have the following lenses: Nikon 18-135mm, Sigma 28-80mm, Sigma 70-300mm, tripod, monopod, and my old Nikon film body the N65. Actually the sigma's are holdovers from the film Nikon and work just fine on the D50.

As for my favorite photo, this is one (but it is hard to choose!):

Sorry I got onto this topic so late. I have had a D50 for about 18 months and love it; so many different capabilities and such a high reliability. About a year after I got mine, I realized I needed another one to have much more freedom and creativity in my shooting (as well as quality backup for an important shoot). And the D50 had been replaced by the D40, clearly not a suitable working pair (though OK if it were mostly a backup). Instead, I found a new D50 on eBay, spent about $600 on it, and have found so many great attributes about carrying the pair (which I do NOT always do!)
The D50 is a wonderful camera, and picking its best image would be impossible, so I will upload one that I like a lot and let that speak for the camera.
