Looks like I'm going to be buying a D80. My present camera is a Canon S2, so I'm going to be lensless. I've heard the kit lens are not too hot, so I was planning on buying just the body, and I'll only be able to afford one lens at this time. A few people told me they love thier Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom. Would this be an OK lens for general porpose work? Its $865, and I cant go a buck over that price right now.

... hmm you are really gonna miss the wider angle from 18-80 range and in my opinion... it will be a waste of $$ to go out in 2 mths and get another lens to cover it .. when you can get teh 18-200 VR lens.. for about the same price as that lens you looking at... then within 6 mths maybe get a 50mm 1.8... that way you have a nice portrait lens good in low light :)

just my 2 cents worth :)

Hey WooD, I'm in the same situation as you! Except I have a Fuji S9500 - so pretty much the same :)

I've got a thread similar, Understanding D80 and Lens (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1947). It's all about understanding what lenses effect the 1.5 magnification that the D80 has, also has some prices and 'kits' that I've put together, along with the help of other members :)

Hope it helps!
