Hello all.
I'm in the process of buying the D80.
My question to knowledgeable members would be.
What lens would you recommend to start out with.
I am interested in Portrait,Wild life,Landscape pics.Maybe some Macro stuff as well.
I would appreciate any help you can offer.
Thanks in advance.
Neil.

hmm all that .. you wont get with just one lens...:( unless ya go with the original Sigma "bigma" 50-500mm

ok..when i brought my D80.. i wanted to get the 18-135 to have more reach than the 18-70mm i have.. but then i read about the 18-200,, VR lens and my day dreams began all over again...lol so for nice portraits i recommend the nifty fifty.. Nikon 50mm1.8 nice price.. add some extension tubes and ya got ya self a great macro thru manual focusing... for wild life you will need at least a 400mm.. i have a 300mm and it is not enough so im leaning maybe towards the 80-400mm tho i do hear its soo slow at Auto focusing its not funny... which to me is not a biggy since i can focus manually aslong as i got my glasses or contacts in...lol

so my ideal line up will be.. the 18-200mm VR and the 80-400mm i do also have a 50mm Sigma Macro but slow and not the best in low light for family get togethers... so i also want a 50mm 1.8

sooo when ya wanna come and play with my gear???

I just ordered a D80 last Friday. This will be my first DSLR, I've been using a Canon S2. The lens I went with is the Nikon 80-200 f/2.8

Several people told me I should have went with the 17-200, because of not being able to take pics up close, but I figure I can always score a 18-55 kit lens off ebay for very little till I can get something better.

Neil, I envy your D80. I use the D70 and have two sigma lenses. To me the important thing is to NOT to buy lenses designated "digital". If you buy those designed for a film camera, you apply a multiplyer (D70 is 1.5x) which means my 28-80 makes for a nice portrait lense. The 70-300 is actually approx. 450 which I do use for small wildlife. I do have the lenses I bought for my N65 but never use them. I love the sigmas. The only problem with this is on the low end. The 28 becomes a 44 which does limit the wide angle a bit, but I have not found that a problem. Both are macro lenses.

Hi Neil, Ihave had my D80 for a couple of months and it's been a great camera so far. It's been worth the money. Mine came with two Nikkor lenses, the 18-55 and the 70-300, and I am already looking at purchasing the 18-200 VR lens, which is pricy, but with the reviews I've read it seems to be well worth it. The lens has a great range and I will probally keep my 70-300 untill I can afford a larger zoom. Hope this helps and enjoy.

Hi Guys.
Thanks for all the reply's.
I went out last Fri and did it!!!.
Bought the D80 with the 18-70 lens.Wanted to get the 70-300 but had to hold off until later.
I have taken a bunch of pics already, obviously.
Some of the pics have turned out o/k others not so good.Still it is great to shoot with this camera.I love it already.
I think I will sign up for the D80 course at Henrys to help me along. The course teacher also does a course at our local Butterfly Emporium,so that should be a good course to take also.Cant wait to learn more stuff.
I was on my home yesterday from the river and was lucky enough to spot a Hawk at the side of the road eating his dinner.
Got a few shots, not the best.I will see if I can post them for your critique.Wish I would have had a better lens with me as I probably won't get that chance again.
Lee,I haven't forgot about your offer, will talk to you soon.
Thanks every one.:) :)
